One day at Goat Hill Park. $450,000 raised for @brotherbenno charity!

@michaelbschwab @jacksonbuttles1 @franchiseit and I were in Oceanside for the 8th Charity Golf Tournament. Kelly Slater’s team finished 18 under and shared the win. Gerry Lopez presented a vintage, hand-shaped board at the auction. An anonymous donor matched bids up to $150,000.

Brother Benno’s serves hot meals, opens its showers, handles mail for people without an address, and runs a recovery program for men getting sober.

Eight years of a community coming back for the same cause.

Pretty cool to see Rote Island featured in the @FinancialTimes this week.

What makes it even more special is thinking back to when Michael (@michaelbschwab) first introduced us to this tiny island years ago. Long before the luxury resorts, international attention, and conversations about what it could become, there was just something undeniably special about the place.

Every six days, a child is killed by a parent in a custody dispute in America.

Most people hear that once. And forget it.

Lesley Hu didn’t forget. She couldn’t.

On January 13, 2021, her nine-year-old son Pierce was shot and killed by his father in a Marina apartment — in my hometown of San Francisco. In the most unimaginable moment of a parent’s life, she made a choice. She became his legacy.

She founded Pierce’s Pledge. She got 120 family law attorneys to sign on. She pushed until every single SFPD police station in SF became a safe gun storage site — the first program of its kind in the nation. And every year, she brings Pierce’s classmates and the youth of United Playaz together for this — a kid-led dog competition in the heart of the city, raising money for gun buybacks and raising awareness about an epidemic hiding in plain sight.

Bullets don’t have area codes.

I donated my Friday to help direct the shoot for this event. It was one of the greatest honors of my life.

The judges who came out said everything about what this city can be when it shows up — Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr, Elisa Donovan, Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, Supervisor Stephen Sherrill, rapper Black C (who lost both of his RBL Posse brothers to gun violence and survived being shot himself), DJ Christian Montoya, and the real stars — the kids. 8th graders and 11th graders standing next to warriors and legislators, doing something.

The partnership between Pierce’s Pledge and United Playaz is something special. Rudy Corpuz has been doing this work since 1994 — built the whole thing from nothing in SOMA, went to prison, came back, opened a $26M clubhouse, and has dedicated his life to one truth:

“It takes the hood to save the hood.”

Best dressed. Highest jumper. Most talented. The competition was fierce — the cause was fiercer.

Some trips you remember. This one I’ll carry forever.

The NIHI Rote Founders opening. @michaelbschwab 50th. All on a remote island paradise most people don’t know about yet.

What Michael, the Partners, and the NIHI Rote team have pulled off here doesn’t happen by accident. It took years of quiet work — the kind nobody posts about. The setbacks, the rebuilds, the days when the dream felt far away. To finally stand on this beach with him, watching the resort come alive on opening week, was a moment I won’t forget!

Every detail was dialed. Watching every corner of this resort fire on opening week — some waves, the foil sessions, the reef, the food, the team — was a masterclass in what happens when you don’t cut corners on a dream.

And the Hospitality Academy graduation. Watching those students cross the finish line, right here on Rote, is the part of this story that will outlast all of us.

To the crew, family, and friends who flew across the world to be there — what a blessing to spend time together at this very special place.

Happy 50th, brother. Here’s to the next chapter.

BACK IN CLASS?! Just wrapped up an intensive VC program at Wharton 🎓🔥

Rigorous indeed — world-class professors who’ve actually done the thing, and a classroom that looked like a UN summit (Nigeria 🇳🇬 Brazil 🇧🇷 Israel 🇮🇱 Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 … and everywhere in between). The energy in that room was unreal.

So yeah…my brain is full, my network elevated, and sleep was merely a suggestion. 😴💀
