270 precast panels. More than 270,000 clay bricks. A façade installed in 13 weeks.

Island, Manchester, demonstrates what clay brick and off-site construction can achieve together.

Designed by @cartwrightpickard, the building uses @furnessbrick's Natural Orange handmade blend within panels manufactured by @techrete. Windows and aluminium panels were fitted off-site, allowing complete façade units to arrive ready for installation.

Just six module types create the building’s varied appearance, including distinctive sawtooth detailing.

A striking example of clay brick’s character brought to life through carefully coordinated modern construction.

This week, we take a look at Lô Dzè, a distinctive hotel and Roman-inspired bathing destination in Martigny, Switzerland, where British handmade clay brick makes its mark.

Just 30 metres from the town’s main square, the development brings together a 50-room boutique hotel, restaurants and a public courtyard. Below ground, a former 19th-century winery has been transformed into Les Bains Publics, an extensive Roman-inspired bathing experience.

Designed by Drip & Drip, the project uses @yorkhandmade’s EBOR Hunsingore Maxima brick slips to connect contemporary architecture with Martigny’s Roman heritage.

Within this tightly controlled historic conservation area, the bricks’ colour, texture and elongated proportions give the substantial street-facing façades a strong identity. York Handmade’s clay pavers continue the material connection into the courtyard, defining spaces for circulation and al fresco dining.

For the owner, the choice delivered “a winning combination of colour, form, texture and cost”.

A striking Swiss setting and a showcase for the contribution British brickmaking can make to architecture beyond the UK.

Explore Lô Dzè in our latest Brick Bulletin – link in the comments.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply speaking up - and sometimes taking the time to listen can make all the difference.

This World Mental Health Day, the theme 'Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change' is a reminder of just how important it is to create space for honest conversations and make sure people know where they can turn when they need support.

That’s one of the reasons we’re proud to have Band of Builders as the charity partner for the 50th anniversary Brick Awards.

Band of Builders supports people working across the construction sector and their families, providing practical, financial and wellbeing support when they need it most.

Through its 24/7 support service, counselling and wellbeing resources, the charity is helping make sure those conversations can lead to real support.

We’re proud to be supporting their work at this year’s Brick Awards and helping shine a light on the importance of looking out for one another across our industry.

From brick-faced precast panels to brick slip systems and prefabricated components, clay brick offers a range of ways to bring colour, texture and architectural character into contemporary construction.

Moving elements of production into a factory environment can support consistent quality and efficient installation, while keeping clay brick central to the design.

Looking for inspiration for your next project? Throughout October, we’ll be showcasing different approaches how projects combine clay brick with modern construction systems, and how early design coordination helps bring architectural ideas to life.

Start exploring the possibilities in our Brickwork and Modern Methods of Construction guide. Link in the comments.

A big thank you to our speakers from @igmasonrysupport, @rpparchitects, @keystonelintels_ and @studiorogers for bringing their knowledge, projects and perspectives to the stage.

It was also fantastic to see so many people from across the local architecture and construction community joining us. Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions, shared ideas and made the evening what it was.

And finally, thank you to IG Masonry Support for supporting Brick Works Belfast and helping us bring another evening of CPD and industry connection to the city.

Soft buff brickwork. Scalloped detailing. A striking addition for St Hilda’s College, Oxford.

Designed by @gortscott, the Anniversary Building demonstrates how clay brick can connect contemporary architecture with an established setting.

Featuring @weareibstock’s Ivanhoe Cream, its gently weathered appearance and subtle colour variations complement the surrounding college buildings. Flush-pointed lime mortar softens the finish, while precast concrete and bronze-coloured metalwork add contrast.

The brickwork, delivered by @allbrickandstone, brings texture and character to a building that frames the college gardens and strengthens the street frontage along Cowley Place. Together with a glazed riverside Pavilion, it helps unite the northern and southern parts of the college estate.

Throughout the last few weeks, we’ve explored how the building envelope does far more than enclose a space. Its design can influence heat transfer, help moderate temperature peaks and contribute to occupant comfort.

When high thermal mass materials such as clay brick are considered alongside effective shading, glazing, insulation and ventilation, they can form part of a whole-building approach to managing internal temperatures.

Catch up on the series in our latest blog, The Power of Thermal Mass in Building Performance. Link in the comments.

For further technical detail, including BDA case studies, thermal shielding and decrement delay, explore the full Brick Skin Thermal Performance Study: https://www.brick.org.uk/guides
