We were recording at the studio Ocean Way...Dolly was working with my then Boss Randy Scruggs. I needed to come in and get some union stuff signed and whatnot and had my daughter, Sadie, with me. She must have been around 3 or 4. At the time she was a little bit shy around people and would sometimes adopt the persona of a tiger...which all started when her Dad brought home a tiger tail from the Tiger Mart...but I digress.
I, carrying Sadie walked in and Dolly came right up to Sadie to say hi and remarked at how cute she was. Sadie in full Tiger mode growled at her and showed her how she used her claws. Dolly didn’t skip a beat and growled right back and swiped in the air with her long pink painted claws. Remarking how a girl has gotta be careful and show who’s boss when they walk into a room of strangers. Sadie couldn’t take her eyes off Dolly. They ended up sitting on the couch together with Dolly feeding Sadie marshmallows till her cheeks looked like a chipmunk! We have a photo of the moment SOMEWHERE in this house. I will find it and share...cause it is share worthy.
The first time I met Dolly was in Randy’s studio. I was kinda new and had already been overwhelmed by the people I had seen walk into his studio to record. And that day I was at my desk by the front door...Dolly walked in and I stood up and she just stuck out her hand and said, “Hi!. I’m Dolly.” As if!
I’ve worked with alot of ‘celebrities’ and people often ask me about who was the nicest and coolest one I’ve ever met. Hands down, my answer is always Dolly Parton. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have met her and live around the corner from her studio and homes in 12South. I would catch glimpses of her pulling out of the alley or drive...always in a very nondescript car and always in the passenger seat :-). Sadie and I dropped some flowers off for her today ❤️
