The power of great lighting.

Never underestimate the impact of a beautiful pendant. Lighting has the ability to completely transform a space, creating atmosphere, adding drama and bringing a room to life.

In the more traditional part of this home, these sculptural globe pendants introduce a contemporary twist, creating a wonderful contrast against the ornate plasterwork and classic architectural detailing.

The custom-made mirror, with its raw steel frame and antiqued mirror finish, continues this conversation between old and new. A little industrial edge, a touch of history and a beautiful interplay of textures and reflections.

It’s all about the balance between classic and contemporary — considered details that complement one another to create something truly timeless.

Because great design is so often about the details. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @bridgetfoleydesign

It’s all in the details…

One of my favourite features of this kitchen design is this beautiful bespoke display and storage area, framed by striking black metal Crittall-style doors.

Positioned close to the dining table, it’s as practical as it is beautiful. The drawers below house all the essentials for entertaining, while the softly lit open shelving above provides the perfect place to display treasured glassware, favourite ceramics and collected pieces.

The glass doors open wide to reveal the entire space, transforming everyday storage into a beautiful feature in its own right.

It’s also my client’s favourite part of the kitchen!

For me, great interior design is about so much more than how a space looks. It’s about thoughtful planning, clever storage, beautiful materials and those considered details that make a space truly personal. by @bridgetfoleydesign

What a wonderful night celebrating the reopening of Wellington City Gallery after two years!

It was so special to be back in this much-loved space and to experience the gallery alive again with art, creativity and people.

i've always loved this building. When it used to be the WellingtonLlibrary I would come here to study for what was then school certificate and university entrance. Back in those days libraries were a quiet space – no talking aloud!

Tonight a highlight was being shown around the Cornelia Parker exhibition by the curators themselves. Cornelia Parker is a renowned English sculptor, known for transforming everyday objects and materials into extraordinary, thought-provoking works of art.

I loved the incredible use of materials, scale, texture, shadow and repetition throughout the exhibition — so much to look at and discover.

A must-see exhibition. Do go along — I’ll definitely be going back!

And if you’re looking for a meaningful way to support the arts in Wellington, becoming a Patron of City Gallery is a wonderful way to help champion this important cultural institution and ensure it continues to bring inspiring art and ideas to our city. taken in City Gallery Wellington by @bridgetfoleydesign

A little before and during on this project — and it’s amazing what a few considered changes can do.

The floors have now been sanded right back and are ready for a fresh, lighter stain, which will completely change the feel of the room and bring out the natural beauty of the timber.

We’re also giving the existing kitchen and bookcase a new lease of life. Rather than replacing the kitchen, the cream joinery is being re-sprayed to coordinate with the freshly painted walls, creating a much fresher, more contemporary look. New handles will finish the transformation.

It’s a great example of how you don’t always need a whole new kitchen or a complete renovation to make a room feel new. Sometimes it’s about looking at what you already have and knowing what to change — and what to keep. taken in Auckland, New Zealand by @bridgetfoleydesign

A room update without starting from scratch.

You don’t always need to replace everything in a room to give it a completely new look.

In this room, we removed the dated window swags and replaced them with soft, floaty sheer linen curtains. The difference was immediate — more natural light floods the room, the beautiful garden becomes part of the interior, and the whole space feels lighter and more contemporary.

We also introduced some new cushions and recarpeted in a beautiful updated sisal-look carpet, adding texture and a fresh, modern feel.

Rather than replacing the existing furniture and treasured pieces, we restyled what was already there and gave everything a new context. Sometimes it’s about seeing what you already have with fresh eyes.

There are a few more pieces still to come to complete the room, but even these relatively simple changes have completely transformed the space.

Good design doesn’t always mean buying everything new — it’s about knowing what to keep, what to change and how to bring it all together.

Two schemes, two homes, two very different looks — one in Auckland and one in Wellington.

One thing I always consider when putting a scheme together is how to create interest, texture and colour without committing to something that may date over time.

I love keeping sofas in a beautiful, plain, timeless fabric and then layering in patterned cushions to bring personality, colour and character to a room. From bold florals and rich greens to delicate embroidery and beautiful textural details, cushions can completely transform a space.

They’re also a wonderful way to introduce more luxurious fabrics that might be too expensive to use across a larger piece of furniture. And the best part? They can be changed over the years as your tastes evolve or you simply fancy a fresh look.

A timeless sofa is a great long-term investment, while cushions give you the freedom to be a little more adventurous without the expense of replacing your furniture.

It’s all about getting that balance right.

The next step for my clients is putting quotes together with trusted suppliers and organising everything right down to delivery dates. 90% of my Furniture and cushions etc are custom designed and made, so clients have furniture that fits their space to the last millimetre and not seen in other homes. by @bridgetfoleydesign

A day spent putting schemes together for a whole home in Kelburn.

One of my favourite parts of the design process is bringing all the different elements together — fabrics, textures, colours and patterns — and making sure they work beautifully as a whole.

Mixing textures and patterns is so important. Without them, a room can feel flat or dull, whereas layering different weaves, subtle patterns and beautiful fabrics adds depth, warmth and interest.

I love how these softer, natural tones are coming together, with just enough pattern and colour to keep things feeling fresh and interesting.

It’s amazing the difference cushions can make.

I always have cushions custom made, choosing beautiful fabrics that bring together all the colours, patterns and textures in a room. They really are the finishing touch that ties everything together.

It’s important to leave room in the budget for cushions when designing a room. They’re also a wonderful opportunity to use those special fabrics that might be too expensive to use on a larger piece of furniture — a little goes a long way!

In this room, we also added beautiful, floaty linen curtains, which instantly updated the space and draw the eye out towards the garden, rather than the heavy swags that were there before.

Last meeting of the week was spent styling a beautiful room I’ve been working on.

The transformation is now complete, but it was those final finishing touches that really brought everything together.

Leaves from my client’s beautiful garden, arranged in this stunning pot, added the perfect finishing touch. We styled the shelves with books and favourite pieces of china, moved treasured objects around and carefully layered the little details that make a room feel personal and lived in.

And the loveliest moment? When my client said she now wants to spend time in this beautiful room.

That’s exactly what good design should do.

The styling stage is such an important part of the design process and one that can make a huge difference to how a room feels — without necessarily buying anything new.

In fact, if you feel like your room is missing something but don’t want to renovate or replace everything, it can be worth employing an interior designer for a few hours just to style and rearrange what you already have. Your books, artwork, china, collected treasures and favourite pieces can look completely different when they’re thoughtfully edited, moved and layered.

It’s all part of what I do — and sometimes it’s the final little touches that can make such a big difference. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @bridgetfoleydesign

A site visit yesterday to a beautiful Auckland home. Making some final decisions on splashback tiles and furniture fabrics — and I have to say, the new paint colours are looking fabulous!

The painters are doing such a great job, and the transformation is really starting to come together.

We’re using my favourite white, Resene Bianca, throughout, with the TV room painted in the beautiful Karen Walker Green Meets Blue.

I’m loving seeing the spaces take shape and can’t wait to share more as we get closer to the finish line.

Stay tuned for updates… taken in Auckland, New Zealand by @bridgetfoleydesign
