I read 34 books in August, but only some of them qualified as Weird Girl Lit. This is my definition and how I base judgements, provided for transparency.

Before a book even enters the test, it must be written by a non-male-identified author, center a female or nonbinary protagonist, and give us sustained access to their interiority.

Then it needs at least three of these five traits:

Social misalignment: She cannot or will not behave legibly within her world. Think Convenience Store Woman.

Destabilized femininity: Womanhood becomes a performance, conflict, failure, or trap. Think My Husband.

Unstable body: Her body becomes alien, porous, altered, hungry, or uncontrollable. Think The Vegetarian.

Transgressive desire: What she wants crosses a boundary and actively drives the story. Think A Certain Hunger.

Refusal of emotional comfort: The novel denies us neat healing, redemption, or reassuring meaning. Think The Driver’s Seat.

This is a working formula, which means the arguments are part of the fun.

Want to get into Weird Girl Lit? Start here.

Women who cannot make themselves want the lives they’re supposed to want. Fixations that consume everything else. Appetites that refuse to behave. Bodies and identities becoming something unfamiliar.

These are five ways into Weird Girl Lit, with familiar essentials and a few newer reads for anyone who’s already worked through the usual recommendations.

The types describe what drives the story, and they can overlap. Finding the ones you love gives you somewhere to go after “I liked Bunny. Now what?”

Which type keeps ending up on your shelves?

Save this for your next bookstore trip, and follow @BridgetIsLit for more weird girl reads. Your TBR could be weirder.

HI! I am Bridget and I thought I would finally introduce myself. I am fairly new to Bookstagram and it is a learning process. I love making weird content to go with my weird books, and would love any feedback or advice on what is interesting to you all and what is not. Mostly doing trial and error and having fun.

I will mostly be reviewing weird girl books. No, I donr love the genre name, but use it because people mostly know what I mean. Girl for me means books that are written by and center nonmale identified authors. So, Nat Cassidy's Mary ... not Weird Girl (though it is brilliant and ends up on my page just was weird book).

Also, likely my favorite song right now.

Now I am rambling. Thanks for reading, commenting, sharing, and following. I look forward to know you all.

What happens when saving a daughter means deciding what her body is for?

Odessa by Gabrielle Sher turns a teenage girl into a golem—and makes other people’s “care” part of her struggle for autonomy.

I struggled with the narrative gate on this one. Her father also has a perspective, and I questioned whether Yetta’s experience truly organizes the book. Ultimately, I landed on yes: his chapters deepen the conflict between the daughter he wants to protect and the person she wants to become. Her embodiment, desires, and refusal remain central.

All three gates pass. Four of five traits. Primary type: Metamorphosis.

And yes, wanting control over your own life can be a transgressive desire when your world insists that choice belongs to someone else.

Four stars. I listened on audio, and Gilli Messer does excellent work with the narration.

There’s also some tongue-in-cheek humor about just how overwhelmingly white these characters and their scene are. I’m curious how that landed for other readers and how you felt about the novel’s handling of addiction and care for someone who’s falling apart.

Vagablonde was originally published by Unnamed Press in 2020 and is being rereleased by Simon & Schuster on October 6, 2026. If the title looks familiar, that’s why.

This is my third @___adorn and I have really enjoyed them all.

Thank you to @simonbooks and @netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This week brought ghosts in a cactus, a golem, a suspicious cat, a rap career taking off while its owner falls apart, an infuriating manager, and plants I still need someone to explain.

Three four-star reads, two narrators doing excellent work, and one book that kept alternating between “I should DNF this” and “okay, I’m charmed.”

This Week in Strange Books:
1. Death Valley
2. Odessa — audioL
3. Look What the Cat Dragged In — ALCV
4.Vagablonde — ARC
5.How Can My Manager Be So Stupid? — translated from Japanese by Haydn Trowell
6. Monstera — ALC

Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, Simon & Schuster, and Tantor Audio for the ARC and ALCs.

Which one deserves a full review? Comment the number.

I find it deeply relaxing to take a completely optional interest far too seriously.

Reading feeds the part of me that wants to follow a question much further than anyone asked. One book becomes an entire backlist, a research project, and several opinions I will apparently be taking to the grave.

I love having something I can care about this much simply because it interests me. Finding people who understand why a deeply unsettling novel sounds like an excellent afternoon makes it even better.

What reading habit do you take a little too seriously?

Josh Silver said something in a recent interview that stuck with me: writers shouldn’t have to be autobiographical, even when they’re writing from feelings and experiences they know deeply.

It made me think about what we actually mean when we call fiction “authentic.”

When I posted about a novel centered on a trans woman, someone asked whether the author was trans. I understood why they were asking—but it raised a bigger question for me. And one I have been thinking about a lot since determining that I would not include male-identified authors in #WEIRDGIRLBOOKS

How much of a character’s life does a writer need to share?

Identity? Sexuality? Trauma? Abuse? Culture? And what happens when a writer shares some of those experiences but not others?

What do you think about?

For me, there is nothing worse than when an author takes their foot off the gas and tries to wrap things up with a bow. If she is in a car going 90 miles an hour pointed at a wall, I expect a crash and not her learning from her experience and healing. Here are some great books where the author commits.

What else would you add to this list?

5/5 star #bodyhorror #WeirdGirlLit #literaryhorrror

Martha has built the life she wanted: a loving husband, a stepdaughter she adores, and a place for herself as the perfect wife and mother. Almost no one knows she is trans, including her husband Leon. When a mysterious illness drives her toward increasingly grotesque treatments, she discovers she is somehow pregnant.

Because the treatments relieve her symptoms, I understood why Martha kept going. I understood Leon’s alarm, too. He sees what she is doing without feeling what is happening inside her body. But his fear gradually becomes a claim to authority over her. I found that turn more disturbing than the treatments themselves: he loves Martha, yet increasingly treats his judgment as reason to overrule hers.

@samanthaloisjosephs draws #carrying from ballroom language, where doing something with such flair that you’re “doing too much” is a triumph. Martha’s immaculate domestic life is a feat of that kind. The title also names what it costs her to maintain it: the fear of being read as trans, the violence that might follow, and the work of passing. She carries all of this into an experience many women know: being expected to care, endure, and give up authority over their bodies. What stayed with me was the common pain, and the additional cost Martha bears for others to recognize her place among women.

Carrying is funny, grotesque, and surprisingly tender. It left me asking how much suffering a woman is expected to absorb to be seen as a woman, a mother, and someone worth loving.

Thank you to @NetGalley and Putnam| G.P. Putnam’s Sons for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
