Last night I stopped by Marsh & Mallow to check out their new space, which is very nice. They’ve been able to spread out (before they were across the street at Director Park) and offer more s’mores. If i could tell you anything, it’s to get the pizza s’more (Marsh’s Pizza). It blew my mind. So good! The Taste of S’moregon is also excellent.

Grand opening is tomorrow (Friday). I encourage you to stop in soon! #smores #marshandmallow #downtownportland #pdx #bridgetownbites taken in Downtown Portland by @bridgetownbites

Some photos from last year’s Portland Fermentation Festival, AKA Stinkfest. The demonstrations, bacterial petting zoo, starter adoption, and tasting are back, and BYOF - Bring Your Own Ferment is new.

It’s a chance to bring part of one of your small batch ferments and share with your fellow fermentation nerds. Plus demonstrations, a bacterial petting zoo, and the big tasting room. Tickets are $15 ahead of time, $20 day of the fest, though it often sells out before that.

More details ➡️ Check out link in bio.

This is a great food festival and I hope to see you there!

I had a chance to chat with Lincoln Clevenson, the man behind Lincoln’s Fine Meats, which is currently slated to open in late November. This will be a whole animal butcher shop, “nose-to-tail,” and with some prepared foods, as well. He’s opening in the old Pasture PDX space on NE Alberta Street, which closed over the summer.

More details ➡️ Check out link in bio.

A handful of tasty things from the weekend. I finally made it into Soro Soro and had this strawberry shortcake and latte with kewt latte art. We also tried the cotton candy affogato, which was an incredible experience. Got some of the fab deviled eggs at Guilder before hitting up the Apple Fest at Rubinette/Providore. Loved the apple cheddar focaccia bites and a chance to try quite a number of apples. #pdxeats #eatyourcitypdx #portland #bridgetownbites taken in Portland, Oregon by @bridgetownbites

In a surprise move, I ended up at Family Cafe for lunch today with Judith and Jason, who I finally met IRL after months of knowing each other online. We were going to go to Salami Mammi but they are closed right now.

We had the Fava Bean Dish served over bread, and Lamb Dish served with rice. Both were excellent and their housemade hot sauce was spicy and tangy - wonderful flavor. We also had one of their pastries - it was filled with spinach, mushroom, and sumac, accompanied by a sweet and savory sauce. The milk tea - black tea with cardamom + warm milk - was very comforting. It came with a handful of sugar cubes and some walnuts.

I loved the food and I look forward to eating there again. This place is a gem. #beaverton #familycafe #beavertoneats #rice taken in Family Café by @bridgetownbites

Earlier this week we (Judith and myself) attended a media dinner for the new evening service of Gabby’s Next Door. They’ve been doing lunch for a while, and now it’s time for dinner. You’ll be able to come here specifically for Gabby’s, and it will also be an option while waiting for your table next door at Gabbiano’s.

Everything was served family style. The bagna cauda with potato chips was already on the table and very - VERY - easy to eat. It’s creamy, a little tangy, with a bit of umami from the anchovies. The charred brassicas had great texture - fork tender - but I tend to like my brassicas even more charred than these were. They came atop a lovely roasted carrot puree that lent a nice sweetness to things. Loved the pickled chili that added some brightness to the mix.

Many who know me know of my 👀 about shrimp (but not bay shrimp); it’s a textural thing. I do try it when given to me and I was happy to find that this shrimp in the Fra Diavolo was more tender than I usually encounter. For me, though, the sauce was the star. Savory with a little kick, so good with the bread. The potatoes were also good but I would have liked a bit more shallot aioli. Texture was excellent.

Two larger dishes were vegetarian manicotti and sausages with beans. Really hard to not want to eat the whole gratin of manicotti, ngl - loved the balance of pasta, filling, and sauce. But even better than that were the beans in the sausage dish. They were my favorite thing I ate all night. So frickin’ good! I would like a whole bowl of these beans plz.

Had a couple of Italian sodas - pineapple and orange vanilla. Would love to see more NA options; next time I’ll check the case more closely (user error on my part).

Thus dinner service will be another great addition to this fantastic food nexus that is Foxchase Addition. Service launches this fall (date TBD).

Great news! Grits N’ Gravy has soft opened under new management - former employee Jesús Alejandro Chipres. Southern food has returned and Jesús fulfills a longtime dream of his. And, they’ll still be in their previous location on SW 6th Ave. Everybody wins.

Their soft opening status means hours are in flux. Hopefully they’ll settle into something like the previous hours, which was 7am to 3pm daily. I’ll update things once their hours get settled.

Scenes from the Portland Craft Chocolate Festival, now in its second year. The first four pics are from last night’s VIP event. Great to see the folks from Sens Botanicals, FKA Still/Spark - I remember them from last year, and I love their products. I bought a bunch of their drinks last year and they are possibly even more tasty this year. The chocolate pieces are from Ranger and it’s a very good salted dark chocolate.

I ate a lot of chocolate samples. Great to see MADE Finest coffee, and picked up a bag. Got a chocolate baby head from Woodblock. Stellaris makes the prettiest bonbons. And Teow blew me away - such lovely chocolates. The chocolate chip cookie contest had 35 finalists for judges to taste. And the Ranger + Smith Tea bonbon release happened, and they are quite nice.

Timed entry was a huge improvement and made the event far more manageable. Vendors were spaced out more, too, which was nice. The fest continues tomorrow. I had a great time! #chocolate #portland #pdxccf #bridgetownbites taken in Olympic Mills Building by @bridgetownbites

Last night I had dinner at Chen’s Good Taste in Vancouver - a combo plate with BBQ pork and General Tso’s. It came with hot and sour soup that actually tasted a little peppery (a lot of Chinese American spots seem to focus more on the sour side of “hot and sour soup”). The egg roll was delicious, almost creamy inside with a delicate crispy exterior. The addition of chili oil helped the General Tso’s get a bit of spice and the pork was very tasty. Pork fried rice was mid.

The highlight of the group’s meal was the chicken and green bean dish (sorry, no pic). The beans were tender yet crispy. I’d definitely get that again. The chicken fried rice looked mild-mannered but had a nice savoriness to it. I’m looking forward to returning and trying other things.

This leads me to today’s article on the possible return of a restaurant in the original Chen’s Good Taste space, which closed down a few years ago because of damage to the building. Good Taste BBQ is the name of the business associated with the address and it looks like it’s connected to Bruce Zhen of Momiji fame. I will continue to keep an eye on developments at this building in Chinatown.
