[06.10.26] Current Read: The Caretaker - Marcus Kliewer 🌲

Oh I’m so glad this came to the library in time for October!
A perfectly eerie read with VERY short chapters, I’m absolutely flying through and loving it.

🐇 Macy Mullins can’t say why the job posting grabbed her attention - it had the pull of a fisherman’s lure, barbed hook and all, vaguely ominous. But after an endless string of failed job interviews, she’s not exactly in the position to be picky. She has rent to pay, groceries to buy and a younger sister to provide for.
Besides, it’s only three days’ work…
Three days, cooped up in a stranger’s house, surrounded by Oregon Coast wilderness.
What starts as a peculiar side gig soon becomes a waking nightmare. An incomprehensible evil may dwell on this property - and Macy Mullins might just be the only thing standing between it, and the rest of humanity.
Follow the Rites…
Follow the Rites…
Follow the Rites…

[02.10.26] AUGUST’S 12 REC PICK:
We Who Will Die - Stacia Stark

It’s viciously unfair that someone so evil is also so compelling. p. 333

Okay I REALLY enjoyed this!
Vampires in a Roman civilisation setting? Yes please!
I feel like this was unlike any other romantasy I’ve read (not that I’ve read a lot of this genre!). It does have similar elements but it’s different enough to keep me interested.
The FMC wasn’t as annoying as others, but she did zone out a lot during battles which was a bit silly haha. I also liked the magic system a lot. I like it when the characters have different powers from each other.
The MMCs were interesting, I’m hoping they have a bit more backstory in the next book. We do get a glimpse of it here, but just hoping for more (especially Rorrik!).
Overall, I’m excited to read the next one that comes out early 2027.
Thank you so much @bookishspy for this rec 🥰

⚔️ Life in the perilous Thorn district is a constant battle for Arvelle and her brothers…
When offered a chance to save her brother’s life, she takes a magical vow. It will bind her to do the impossible…
Kill the Emperor.
But to get close to him, she must enter the Sundering - an arena where only the fastest, strongest and deadliest survive long enough to be selected for the Emperor’s elite guard.
As the stakes get higher and secrets emerge, she quickly draws the ire of the Primus - a powerful figure charged with protecting the emperor - while also finding herself dependent on the Emperor’s sadistic son, Rorrik, to hone her growing powers.
With Arvelle’s destiny deeply entwined with these two vampires, she must unravel a conspiracy that will change everything she thought she knew about herself. But only if she can complete her mission.
And survive the arena… taken in Hobart, Tasmania by @bridgets.cosy.diary

[21.09.26] Cosy Sunday: September 🌬️

A verrrry windy couple of days down here so a day indoors was called for!

Watched some YouTube, read some Frieren, painted my nails, played the Woodo demo, watched some Yellowstone.

The only thing I didn’t include was my partner going to cricket training 🤦‍♀️

Really liked making this. Think I’ll try and do one of these a month!

[16.09.26] Current Read: Iron Flame - Rebecca Yarros ⚔️

I have been putting this off for so long because I’ve heard it wasn’t as good as the first… and everyone was right.
But I’m pushing through so I can read Onyx Storm which I’ve heard is much better!

🐉 Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College - Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s gruelling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is - unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits - and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College - and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

[22.08.26] Current Read: Yesteryear - Caro Claire Burke 🐄

I’m in a tiny bit of a reading slump right now but I have been enjoying this one when I’ve been up for reading.

🌾 Natalie lives a perfect, traditional lifestyle - and her followers are sick with envy. Her charming farmhouse on her working ranch is artfully cluttered, her husband is a handsome cowboy and her homemade sourdough boules are each more beautiful than the last. So what if there are Nannie’s and producers and industrial-grade ovens behind the scenes? What her followers don’t know won’t hurt them.
Then, one morning, Natalie wakes up in a strange, horrible version of reality. Her home, her husband, her children - they’re all familiar, but something’s off. Is this a hoax? A reality show? A test from God? Natalie knows just two things for sure: this isn’t her perfect life, and she must escape, by any means possible.
As darkly funny as it is shocking and gripping, Yesteryear is an electrifying examination of tradition, fame, faith and the grand performance of womanhood, from a thrilling new talent in fiction.

[11.08.26] JULY’S 12 REC PICK:
Leave Me Behind - K. M. Moronova
⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Together, our broken pieces can do anything.” p. 323

So before this book, I hadn’t read any dark romance. I now know it’s just not my thing. And that’s okay! I tried it.
I liked the overall revenge plot, but when it came to the “dark romance” bit, I just wasn’t interested. Also, the twist? I hate to say I saw it coming.
Thank you so much @chrissareads for this rec 🥰

🔫 Nell Gallows is the sole survivor of an elite dark forces squad, Riøt, after a detrimental attack two years ago. Unsurprisingly, she’s being put up as the top candidate for the special ops team: Malum. The squad that goes where no one else will or can. There’s only one problem: Malum blames their one casualty from the Patagonia mission on the Riøt squad.
So what is she to do when she finds herself on a plane to California and on her way to a sure death sentence? A one night stand. At least, that’s all it was supposed to be - one last night to be free. Only, she finds out too late that the dark and mysterious man she solely wanted as a fling is not only her comrade but also the one she dreaded meeting the most - her immediate superior and untouchable devil in the field. Bones. He’s hell on earth - cruel and unforgiving, but most of all, he hates her, and he makes sure she knows it.
And yet, she finds herself unwilling to leave his side when he’s unable to get to the evac point when their mission goes awry. She stays behind with the devil and the secrets he keeps. They only have one another to trust when no faith is left. by @bridgets.cosy.diary

[02.08.26] JUNE’S 12 REC PICK:
The Great Alone - Kristin Hannah
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

She could never tell him how it felt to live with a dad who scared you sometimes and a mother who loved him too much and made him prove how much he loved her in dangerous ways. p. 69

Oh, Leni. You poor girl.
Told in three parts, in three different moments in their lives, we follow the Allbrights to their new home in rural Alaska. I loved reading about all the different characters in the small community, as well as how the Allbrights adjusted to the new way of living.
This was my first Kristin Hannah book and certainly won’t be the last! However, I will take a break before the next one. I read this so slowly and it was just. So. Heartbreaking.
Thank you so much @bridiereadsalot for this rec 🥰

🏔️ 1974. Ernt Allbright, erratic and fragile after returning from Vietnam, makes the impulsive decision to move his family to Alaska. His wife, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time, but she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a brighter future for her family, and a place to belong.
The Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women who welcome them. But as winter sets in and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates.
As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew - thoughtful, kind, brave - makes her believe in the possibility of a better life…
