I love this show curated by Danielle A. Hill @elleinvd @armoryarts

Showing my video piece “Daughter you seem foreign to me” alongside incredible works by @anaisandsachi , @francesca_lalanne_art , @maddy_inez (in that order in the slides)

“This exhibition brings together works by Anais Franco, Francesca Lalanne, Maddy Inez, and Brie Ruais, who explore nature, ancestral histories, memory, and healing. Engaging in lifestyles that forge connections to land, community, and the self, the artists in this exhibition use ceramics, steel, wood, film, and more-than-human life to consider reciprocal relationships with the environment. Connecting the spirits of living beings through their practices becomes a pathway towards cultural and ecological preservation.

In the wake of worsening climate catastrophes, such as the Eaton Fire, that damage the landscape and uproot communities, the exhibition reflects on bell hooks’ poem in Appalachian Elegy: Poetry and Place, Section I, which calls for collective listening as a way of understanding how to care for it. Together, the artists reveal how connection to the earth can become a means of restoration, reflection, and return. “

“Scraped Away from Center, 130lbs (Night)” 2018

Thank you to Leah Tripplet Harrington @leah_triplett and Lea Stephenson (and Jodi Throckmorton @throckles for originally acquiring the piece for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2018) for including my work in an incredible exhibition of the permanent collection at PAFA.

It’s such an honor to share space with luminaries Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Marin Hassinger, Rina Banerjee, Alison Saar, Wangechi Mutu, Judy Chicago, Georgia o Keeffe, and peers Doron Langberg @doronlangberg , Amy Lincoln @amyplincoln , Kati Gegenheimer and so many more 🤍

The exhibition “A Nation of Artists”, marks the reopening of the Historic Landmark Building. The exhibition is curated thematically, grouping artworks as never before assembled to explore new ideas, connections, and interpretations of American art. The installation includes contemporary art from the 21st century, placing today’s most exciting living artists in dialogue with those of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries

And thank you as always to @albertzbenda for making this acquisition possible 🤍🤍🤍 taken in PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts by @brie_ruais

Hi LA! Looking forward to attending the opening of this show featuring so many artists I have long admired. This show bravely “revisits and challenges the historically dominant narratives of large-scale abstraction, sculpture, and Land Art. This group exhibition engages with the legacy of formalism while confronting colonial histories, memory, and the natural world. “

Thank you @nlameyer for curating this exciting show, can’t wait to see it!

More from the press release:

Through diverse practices and a distinctly feminist, material sensitivity, the artists reimagine the relationship between the body, object, and environment, offering new sculptural languages that both honor and unsettle the conventions of the past.

Expanding beyond an initial focus on metal, the works bring material and conceptual depth to question the history of monumentality in sculpture and to propose renewed ways of thinking about form, space, and relation.

Heavy Metal is curated by LAMAG curator, Nancy Meyer and includes works by Kelly Akashi, Miya Ando, Barbara Berk, Amy Bessone, Tanya Brodsky, Beatriz Cortez, Claire Chambless, Alika Cooper, Paige Emery, Katie Grinnan, Ting Ying Han, Andrea Hidalgo, Kelly Lamb, Abigail Lucien, Fay Ray, Brie Ruais, Carolyn Salas, Davina Semo, Kelly Wall, and Lisa Williamson.

Research and administrative support provided by Zandra Sweeney, Oxy InternLA 2025.

Bodies of Becoming brings together works by Corydon Cowansage @corydon_c , Tahnee Lonsdale @tahneelonsdale , Camilla Engström @camillamengstrom , and Brie Ruais that explore transformation through material, rhythm, and care. Working across painting, sculpture, and video, the exhibition considers becoming as an ongoing process shaped by attention, repetition, and time.

RICHMOND, VA 23220

Across the exhibition, change unfolds gradually through states of growth, containment, and release. Each artist constructs an inner world shaped by intuition, labor, and cyclical movement, where form emerges through pressure, proximity, and sustained engagement.

Together, the works in Bodies of Becoming reflect on transformation as a lived condition - one formed through relation and continuity, where care functions as an active, ongoing practice. taken in Main Projects by @brie_ruais

Sometimes the work shows me what it wants to become. This body of work has been reminiscent of, unfolding like, unfurling - as flowers do - for years. Sometimes flowers around me look at me as intently as I look at them— from the sides of roads, from the floral section of the grocery store, from my garden, from the cracks between pavement. Do you think that when you notice and admire a flower, she is also noticing and admiring you ? 🌱
🦎
The impulse to grow, to attract, to create is with us as it is with plants (and all beings). it’s not impossible that I know in my body how to move like the veining and fleshing of petals, the articulation and individuation of parts. Am I a flower as well as Brie? The cells in her and the cells in me are both porous, both constantly exchanging energy.

Performing the Light Across the Full Moon, 135lbs
2023
64.75 x 67 x 3”
Glazed stoneware, hardware

Thinking of this piece as the light wanes and rakes across the earth this Fall. I love this sharply angled light! I made this piece by embodying the movement of the sun’s light across the surface of the moon

I showed this piece in a solo show Prenumbra at @sevensistershouston in Fall 2023 , as the light was waning then too. 🙏🏻🩷

An eclipse requires three celestial bodies: the sun, the moon, and the Earth. In 'Performing the Eclipse of Three Bodies, 130lbs + 130lbs' (2023), the viewer becomes a fourth presence, encircled by a radiating arc of stones and placed within the zone of partial light between full illumination and complete shadow. Ruais explores this liminal space, evoking tension between the sacred and the everyday, and the quiet magic of nighttime unfolding in daylight.

“The practical advice Jung gave for remedying the loss of contact with Nature, is not much different from what is widely available today: to live in small communities; to work a shorter day and week; to have a plot of land to cultivate so our instincts come back to life; and to make the sparest use of radio, television, newspapers, and technological gadgetry. The purpose of doing these things, however, is not to repair Nature, but rather to let Nature affect us… A balanced interaction between human nature and Nature requires that we also invite – allow – nature to heal us.”

- From the introduction to “The Earth has a Soul: Jung on nature, Technology and Modern life”, edited by Meredith Sabini
