Piece by piece, a work of art comes to life.

Created as a site-specific commission for Canyon Ranch Austin, artist Brie Ruais’ “Ascending from Earth to Cosmos” is a 14-foot-wide installation that connects the landscape to the sky.

The 130-pound ceramic sculpture bears the physical marks of its making, and the grooves in the clay are formed by Ruais’ hands, fingers, feet, and toes. Surrounding it are “satellite” rocks, including stones gathered on the property before construction began, embedding a piece of the land itself into the work.

Its circular forms evoke both earth and sky: agricultural fields, lakes and craters alongside planetary orbits and the vastness of the night sky. Even the colors seem to shift as the Texas light moves from day to sunset.

so many words, but mostly gratitude to have had creative exchanges that center our bodies relationship with land, oppressive systems that disrupt mutuality, and the spirit of all living beings. Thank you Francesca, Anais, Maddy, and Brie for shaping these ideas 🫂

Just after my solo show at Kristen Lorello @kristenlorello_gallery opened this spring I threw myself into a 2 1/2 month long bedroom renovation. I’ve owned my schoolhouse for over 10 years but never had a proper closet. It was always on my bucket list of things to renovate. After making design plans with the help of Matt @mucadeluca we were able to successfully renovate this room together. I taught myself how to frame out a room for the very first time and we hung and mudded/taped drywall together. It very well could have been the beginning of many fights, but it was a very positive and trust building experience for me and I hope for him too.

Over the last decade, I’ve taught myself many manual skills which I never would have developed while living in a city environment. Living in this rural part of Pennsylvania has encouraged me to become more self-sufficient and self reliant. I am proud of myself for collecting all these skills: art, design and build.

I’m also very happy to have many pieces from artists I have known over the years or through the artist residency I started at Bischoff Inn @bischoffinn It’s exciting to see these pieces on a daily basis.
