ā€˜Children & War’ is the lens through which we will looking at Children’s Literature from the late-Edwardian era until now. The degree to which experiences of war have shaped not just individual authors and books but also the development of writing and publishing for children is profound. The stories behind the creation of much-loved classics (and also some overlooked gems) are varied and fascinating – but all share the common theme of resilience of the human spirit and the power of the imagination.

Go all in and borrow a staff pick šŸ“š

To celebrate the #NationalYearofReading2026 our library staff are sharing their book recommendations every month!

I love Ali Smith’s books. It always takes me a few pages to settle into her writing style, as it’s so poetic and different to most other authors. In this book the main characters are two children and a horse, set in a dystopian near future, so it took me a beat to adjust to their voices.

I find it’s worth taking the time to settle into reading her novels, as I can’t help but get sucked into the stories and hoping for the best for her characters, and the language is always arresting and thought provoking.

I started reading this while stuck in a waiting room for several hours – it took me right out of myself and time flew. I can’t wait to see how it ends - or maybe I don’t want to know, that’s the trouble with dystopian novels.
