Through the Viewfinder: a free workshop with Elva Webb & Jules Turner

Meet @bear__clip & @myteeth444 the artists behind Through the Viewfinder, an upcoming workshop as part of @photoworks_uk Festival 2026.

Taking place at @brightonhovelibraries on 24 October, 2–4pm, the free, queer-led workshop invites participants to explore 35mm film slides, projection, scale and storytelling through a queer lens.

Through collaging with different materials, you will construct your own realities onto fragments of discarded and forgotten histories.

📅 24 October 2026, 2pm to 4pm
📍 Jubilee Library, Brighton
✨ Free, drop-in, queer-led and open to everyone aged 13+

Elva and Jules are young artists who graduated from the @uniofbrighton BA Fine Art in 2025.

They are part of Photoworks Queer Grounds, a free programme of creative workshops for ages 16 to 25, led by photographers @evalouisaj and @kairo.kay delivered by Photoworks in partnership with the @devonshirecollective and @phoenix_artspace.

October is Black History Month in the UK.

Over the past years, Black History Month rightly celebrated notable figures whose achievements have changed the course of history.

This year, we are recognising that history is not only made in moments of visibility. It is built over time, through consistent acts of care, leadership and responsibility.

We’re celebrating Black individuals who show up every day for others − volunteers who give their time without expectation, teachers who shape futures far beyond the classroom, nurses and carers who offer dignity and compassion in moments that matter most, community leaders and organisers who bring people together. Their contributions may not always make headlines, but they have a lasting impact on the lives of the people around them.

Join us in celebrating Black history, culture and heritage with a plethora of fantastic events planned across the city.

Wow, what a brilliant return to Pirriwee this was. I absolutely loved every page of Big Little Truths - and if you’re worried because you can’t remember what happened in book one or you are new to the series, let me reassure you that there are plenty of plot reminders perfectly scattered throughout BLT.

This time around, the kids are all teenagers and the parents are in their 40s and 50s, dealing with all that life throws at them- caring for elderly parents, dealing with hormonal teenagers, trying to take care of themselves, menopause- the list goes on and on.

The school has a new head and a new history teacher Melody , who quickly befriends a lot of the parents and is a firm favourite with the students. We know from the outset that there has been a Major Incident involving most of the kids, and the way that the story unfolds is perfectly delivered.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone an absorbing entertaining page turner that will keep you on your toes. Huge thanks to @brightonhovelibraries for keeping their shelves so well stocked!

Susie looked from Matt to Gajadhar. I’m a scientist, which means I don’t like to dismiss anything without considering all points of view.’ She said with a hint of piety.
‘Very wise,’ agreed Gajadhar. What was it that the wonderful Sherlock Holmes says, ‘when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?’

The Book Fairies are delighted to be joined in Brighton by author J. R. Moir as our #BookFairyForADay! They’ve been busy sharing copies of Big Cats Don’t Purr in some purr-fectly relevant locations around the city.

Who was lucky enough to spot one?

About the book:

The summer of 1976.

Lankin Moors Wildlife Park, surrounded by moorland and buried deep within the English countryside, is a micro-society of people and animals. An insular, self-serving kingdom that is home to riotous parties, drunken pub nights and drugs.

After the sudden and unexplained death of one of the elephants, the zoo staff desperately cling to their hedonistic lifestyle as feelings of hate, envy and lust, stoked by an endless heatwave, threaten to bubble to the surface.

This threat becomes reality as a sporadic madness mysteriously sweeps through the zoo, affecting animals and keepers alike and triggering a dramatic chain of events that finally leads new education officer Matt, along with his allies - Gajadhar, an Indian mahout, and Susie, the local vet - to a heart stopping fight for survival.
