Personality tests don’t tell the full story

Every personality quiz runs on self-report. You answer a few dozen questions about yourself and it takes your word for it. The problem is most of us aren’t great judges of our own patterns. The people closest to us usually spot them long before we do.

Your parents only know the version of you that you’ve given them.

Most of us share the highlights and skip the rest, so the picture they have never really updates. And when they treat you like you’re still 19, it’s easy to find it annoying instead of seeing it for what it is, which is love aimed at someone they haven’t fully met yet.

When did you take your personality test, and who were you back then?

Whatever it gave you, it hasn’t updated since. You’ve changed jobs, ended relationships, and learned a few things the hard way, and those four letters have stayed exactly the same.

That’s the limit of a one-time quiz. It can sort you into a category, but it can’t see how you actually behave with the people closest to you, and that’s the part that runs your relationships.
