A woman at a tech event last week asked me if she should put her dad’s old letters into briidge to talk with him again.

He has dementia. He’s still alive. She just can’t reach him the way she used to.

I told her about the Mirror Chat that we’re building inside the briidge app. That she could take everything he wrote and essentially talk with him again through it.

She lit up, and she still hasn’t decided what she wants to do yet.

Both of those can be true at the same time.

I’ve always known what we were building.

But watching it matter to someone standing right in front of you is different.

That’s a feeling I won’t forget.

Your parents probably aren’t trying to dismiss your feelings.

They just learned that love means solving problems.

For a lot of immigrant families, care was shown through action. Providing. Protecting. Fixing things.

So when you open up and they immediately start giving advice, they think they’re helping.

To them, the solution is the support.

And when you don’t take the advice, it can feel like the care behind it wasn’t wanted.

Most family tension isn’t a lack of love.

It’s people trying to care for each other in completely different ways.

The way you text your parents back probably says more about you than you think.

Some people send a message and check every few minutes for a reply.

Others see the notification, don’t answer right away, and suddenly it’s been three days.

Most people think that’s just personality.

But a lot of it started long before phones existed.

The way you learned closeness as a kid tends to follow you into adulthood — including your family relationships.

And you can’t change a pattern you haven’t noticed yet.

There’s probably a text from a family member sitting unanswered in your phone right now.

Not because you don’t care.

You meant to reply. Life just kept moving.

And that’s how most relationships drift apart.

Not through one big moment.

Through small missed interactions that slowly become normal.

And almost nobody does it on purpose.

We have more self-improvement content than any generation in history.

Better habits. Better routines. Better productivity.

And people still feel disconnected from the people closest to them.

Because at some point, self-improvement can become a way of avoiding the conversations you actually need to have.

Another podcast. Another framework.

And you still haven’t called your dad.

Harvard tracked people for 85 years and found the biggest predictor of a meaningful life wasn’t status, money, or output.

It was relationships.

So if you’re doing all the work and still feel disconnected…

You might be optimizing the wrong thing.

The family group chat can make everyone feel connected without anyone actually being close.

Everyone checked in. Nobody said anything real.

You can talk to someone every day and still have no idea what’s happening in their life.

Because contact and closeness aren’t the same thing.

The real question isn’t how active your family chat is.

It’s whether anyone would notice if something was wrong

That’s why we’re building @briidge.app

A lot of family tension comes from one thing nobody talks about.

The last time your parents had daily access to you was probably in high school.

Since then, you’ve changed completely, but they weren’t there to watch it happen in real time.

So when conflict happens, it’s usually not bad intentions.

It might just be two people interacting with outdated versions of each other.

That’s why we’re building @briidge.app

Moving abroad changes your life.

New opportunities, new people, a new routine.

But there’s a part no one talks about.

Your relationships at home slowly change.

Short calls. Generic texts. Not because you don’t care.

Because you don’t know how to stay close in a life you’re no longer part of.

And over time, it fades. Not all at once. So gradually you don’t even notice it happening.

That’s the part we keep missing.

The wellness industry is worth $6 trillion.

Apps for sleep, fitness, nutrition, meditation — everything about your individual health.

But Harvard tracked people for 85 years and found the biggest predictor of health and longevity isn’t any of that.

It’s the quality of your close relationships.

Loneliness carries the same health risk as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

So we’ve built tools for everything about taking care of yourself.

And almost nothing for the thing that actually determines how your life feels.
