During Women’s History Month, I was recently interviewed by @canvasrebel magazine about my story, even as I navigate one of the most challenging professional seasons of my life.

At first I thought… why? I haven’t “Made It” yet. But the mid-journey trajectory is where the real gold is. And I am undeniably serious about my path.

Then I realized this isn’t just for me. One day my nieces, nephews, and blossom cousins will read about my extremely resilient and self-driven story and know how to keep blossoming, no matter what 🌸

The Museum of Us!
Featuring a limited exhibition: Blossom Fall. 🍂🌸🖼️

Life has been LIFE-ING, my social battery has been fighting for workers’ comp and lately I’ve been paradoxically unnerved and in need of a little more distance than usual.

But my friend came into town, so I got dressed, put on an outfit with absolutely NO INDOOR VOICE 😂 and showed up at my FIRST @culturecon as the version of myself I had available.

And I’m glad I did.

I laughed. I had meaningful conversations. I took in beautiful Black people creating, dreaming and taking up space. And someone was kind enough to remind me that I don’t have to wait until I feel completely like myself again to participate in community.

Sometimes you just show up as you are and let the outfit do the shouting dahhlingg!

Back in July, I saw Every Brilliant Thing on Broadway 🎭 and something about being asked to notice the tiny, peculiar, beautiful things that make life worth experiencing stayed with me.

This year gave me plenty of reasons to lose sight of the good stuff. But it also gave me some really brilliant things I don’t ever want to forget.

So after a B’Earthday spent slowing down, reflecting and exhaling, I made my own little list:

20 brilliant things from my last trip around the sun. 🌸

1. Being handed a tiny card at a Broadway show and getting to say my brilliant thing to @traceeellisross: “The look on a dog’s face as it leans out the window of a moving car.”

2. Being serenaded “Happy Birthday” by a Broadway star I have the pleasure of working with. Saying Happy B’Earthday will no longer suffice… SANG IT! 😂🎭

3. Finding a real-life house that looked so much like a dollhouse from my childhood that, for a second, grown-up Blossom and baby Blossom were standing there together 🥰🌸💚

4. Making an unofficial campaign anthem for @amandaforrhinebeck with @youngstar843 and we’ve never met her, but wanted to do our civic service. 😂🇺🇸

5. Being reminded by a 21-year-old that apparently I STILL GOT IT. Sir, thank you for your service, but you are a BABY. 😭😂

6. The possibility that repeatedly pulling wedges out of my ass is actually evidence of Pilates growth. 🍑😂

7. “YOUR EYES BIG.” 😭 Some compliments simply deserve reenactments.

8. Strangers who see you sashaying and immediately understand the assignment: HYPE HER UP. 😂

9. My Virgo twin @iamleefuller (we share the same B’Earthday). ♍️ A friendship where being seen, believed in and spoken life into has become its own kind of gift.

10. The kind of friendship where somebody comes flying out of a bathroom just because they’re THAT happy to see you. 😂 @morgan_the_magnificent 🥰

11. @jellyybeeeaannn. That’s it. That’s the brilliant thing. 🥹💕

12. Rapping about Bojangles because GOTTA HAVE IT, I NEED BOJANGLES is frankly a philosophy I can get behind, and don’t forget the honey mustard.

You know I was going to celebrate my husband on his B’Earthday. 🥳♍️✨

I’ve always felt a connection to Michael that’s hard to explain. And respectfully, you don’t get it 😌 especially if you’re not a Virgo OR your B’Earthday doesn’t fall right after his like mine does. OOP 😂

His 8/29. Mine 8/30. There’s something special about knowing my own trip around the sun begins just as his is complete. 💚♍️

Same Sun, Rising, Mercury and Venus. The precision, the depth, the need to express fully… he’s always felt familiar to me. My soulmate, dahhhlingg. 😂

And since his life didn’t exactly give him grounded stability, emotional safety or agency… obviously this is why we ended up married. He needed my Taurus Moon. ♉️😂

Spending the eve of my own B’Earthday celebrating him at Spike Lee’s MJ Block Party feels especially fitting. 🪩👑🌸

Blossom Cousins 🌸

My body had been holding its breath for quite awhile… until it finally exhaled.

Everything has soften.
My mind gotten quieter.
For the first time in a long time, I felt safe in my body… not bracing, not rushing, just being.

Jazz playing. Nature outside my window. Warmth on my skin.
Peace, without having to earn it.

I came here to rest, but really
I came back to myself.
