today i bought crumpets & tea
from coop, not tesco
so i could sit
at least in my mind
in maddy’s garden
with crumpet asleep at my feet

walking down my street
felt like waking in edinburgh
at 5am, jet-lagged
wandering the meadows
passing girls with last night’s eyeliner
and the runners chasing sunrise

the magpies turned into the swans
and for a moment,
my front door became maddy’s flat
her key turning next to mine

i put on my striped sweater
and dressed for a pint at spoons
instead of cold garden

most days i love the moments of here:
the cold breeze,
the pine trees,
the living fully present.

but today i let myself drift
to where i could give riya
the biggest, silliest hug
and stay there across the pond,

i went searching for change,
and the island answered.

i chose the ocean over the noise sometimes,
the waves over the crowds,
myself over everything else.

plans dissolved into flow,
flights slipped away,
yet i found what mattered:
beauty in faces,
grace in places,
memory in the in-between.

an open heart,
