Join BronxArtSpace tomorrow, 12/15 at 3pm for an Artist Talk. Moderated by curator Sara Reisman, artists Michael Paul Britto and Jonathan Allen will discuss their current exhibition See This Country Clearly.

On view at Bronx Art Space through December 21, See This Country Clearly brings into dialogue Allen and Britto's recent projects that examine the politics of everyday life in New York City, where the two artists find inspiration. Allen's Disruptions series began in 2017 in response to the rolling back of civil rights in this country. By intervening into advertisements in public spaces, like the promotional posters and video screens found in the New York City subway, Allen engages a captive audience through the application of text onto surfaces of the built environment. His process involves selecting direct quotes, and in other instances his poetic interpretations of the news cycle, with sources ranging from political address to social justice campaigns.

Britto's collages and video projections reflect on the individual experience of civic life, with one series from 2022 titled NYCHA, each of the eight collages functioning as portraits of himself and his students and friends, whose movements within and through the architectural landscape of the New York City Housing Authority express a mixture of vulnerability, strength, and play. Britto's use of the silhouette includes projection and collage to convey the humanity of specific individuals - for example in Saint Trayvon, 2019, and Black Boy, 2013/2024 - that underscore how care and empathy can be commonly held in the face of divisive social and economic conditions.

Working in collage, text, public address, video, and installation, Allen and Britto question what it means, in this pivotal time, to really see our country for what it is, a flawed democracy, the course of which has shifted away from historically upheld democratic safeguards.

This Friday, November 22nd 6-8pm Bronx Art Space is pleased to announce the opening of SEE THIS COUNTRY CLEARLY, a two-person exhibition featuring recent work by visual artists Michael Paul Britto and Jonathan Allen, curated by Sara Reisman.
