A few moments from the opening night of Breaking Dance last Saturday.

The evening held a celebratory conversation and performance in the theater with Carlos Mare sharing the ideas, histories, and dialogues behind the exhibition. The event in the round was surrounded by artists, dancers, friends, and members of the community, and set the stage for an evening centered on movement—not only as a form of dance, but as a way of carrying culture, memory, and identity.

Thank you to everyone who gathered with us to celebrate.

✨ Remembering Lorraine O’Grady ✨

It’s been a couple of weeks since I learned of Lorraine’s passing, and I’m still processing this profound loss. Lorraine was such an incredible person, and her influence on my life and art is immeasurable.

I first met Lorraine in 2007 at Yasmin Ramirez’ and Bill Lipton’s wedding. Little did I know then, that it would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Our paths crossed again in 2011 through Clifford Owens at MoMAPS1, where I was excited to connect with her in an artistic context.

By 2014, I reached out to invite her to be part of The Supper Club. I remember her playful assumption that I was just a young student! When I arrived at her studio, we hit it off immediately, bonding over our Caribbean roots and our shared experiences in the art world. Lorraine reminded me of my great aunt in spirit and in looks, and our conversations spanned topics from colorism to our favorite celebrities.

Photographing Lorraine was a dream. She had her own iconic style, with a wardrobe full of incredible pieces and a collection of 20 shades of red Chanel lipstick. To me, she was a true icon—ageless and relevant. I wanted to capture her essence, much like Warhol did with other celebrities.

Lorraine’s wisdom and generosity were invaluable to me during my time working on The Supper Club and beyond. I’m grateful for every moment we shared, for the advice she offered, and for the love she showed. When she spoke, her words resonated with everyone in the room, shown here at a dinner after her opening in 2018, during the Supper Club book launch at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2019 and at Simone Leigh’s Loophole of Retreat in Venice in fall 2022, which was the last time I saw her. We promised to see each other in 2023, but life had other plans. The regret of not reaching out sooner weighs heavy on my heart.

I will miss her kind words, her spirit, and her profound influence on me and on so many others. She was a friend, a mentor and now my spirit guide. May Lorraine’s legacy live on in all of us.

Rest in peace and in power, dear Lorraine. 💔
