Weaving together interpretative translations, research, interviews, and sounds, Ways of Awe is a queer anti-Zionist audio companion for the Jewish High Holidays. We just passed 5,000 downloads! 🎉 Thank you to everyone in this web of listeners.

Will you help us to create Season Two? We have a goal to fundraise $3,000, and it will go towards studio hours, editing, and production costs, as well as to Signal Fire Co-op for hosting and promoting our project. In this time where money is needed to fund so many essential efforts, we invite you to match whatever amount you give to Ways of Awe towards the movement for Palestinian liberation. On October 4, 1936, ninety years ago today, over 100,000 people (and maybe as many as half a million) stood in the streets of London's predominantly Jewish east end to block fascists from marching through. The city government permitted this fascist march, the police beat people who tried to block the way, and the leader of these fascists was a former member of Parliament, Oswald Mosely.

We covered and sing a ballad of the battle of Cable Street, written by The Young'uns @theyoungunstrio based on the remembrances of a survivor of the battle of Cable Street, Johnny Longstaff. The Young'uns wrote an entire song cycle/show about him. We sing to remember, honor, and celebrate the people's victory over fascists -- when people of all ages and backgrounds stood together in solidarity against fascism. We have defeated fascists before and we will do it again.

Last night, I went to a book talk by Dave Zirin @edgeofsports to hear about his new biography of Howard Zinn z"l. It occurred to me as i arrived to the bookstore that maybe I should have brought an album with me to give to Dave. Cradle Songs, Grave Songs has a song on it with text lifted from Zinn's essay "Don't Despair about the Supreme Court," set to a melody i learned from the great singer, teacher, and folklorist Ethel Raim in 2018 during the hearings to (regrettably) appoint Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Sports commentator and now biographer of Zinn, it was truly delightful to listen to Dave talk about the life and legacy of our great historian. I am looking forward to reading this book.

And if you haven't heard our aforementioned song, there is a link in our IG bio to our music, and also here:

Our dear comrade Peter Lippman invited us to play at his monthly salon Muhabbet, at Cafe Paloma, along with his band Suki's Klez Jam -- Paloma & Muhabbet are some of our absolute favorite spaces to be in in Seattle. And between sets, we had a stimulating conversation to recognize this time of year on the Jewish calendar, discussing interventions to religious, nationalist, and zionist indoctrination, in part inspired by Maia's new podcast @waysofawe

"This is not a prayer. This is about border crossing.

By arriving at Kol Nidre, we have given permission to take part in this mournful and magical legal proceeding and we have agreed to do so amongst, alongside, with the “avar’yanim,” often translated as “the transgressors” or “the sinners.” The root of this word, avar, means to pass, to cross a border, to swell, to run over... it can also simultaneously mean to transgress and to forgive or pass-over a transgression. Border crossing is an activity of harm and healing - we have the capacity to transgress boundaries in harm as well as pass-over (angel of death style) the mistakes we make."

- Maia Brown, from the Kol Nidre episode
