"This is not a prayer. This is about border crossing.

By arriving at Kol Nidre, we have given permission to take part in this mournful and magical legal proceeding and we have agreed to do so amongst, alongside, with the “avar’yanim,” often translated as “the transgressors” or “the sinners.” The root of this word, avar, means to pass, to cross a border, to swell, to run over... it can also simultaneously mean to transgress and to forgive or pass-over a transgression. Border crossing is an activity of harm and healing - we have the capacity to transgress boundaries in harm as well as pass-over (angel of death style) the mistakes we make."

Weaving together interpretative translations, research, interviews, and sounds, Ways of Awe is a queer anti-Zionist audio companion for the Jewish High Holidays. Episodes go live next week—on Rosh Chodesh Elul 5786 (August 12/13 2026). ✨️

Join talmud scholars, rabbis, and artists as they unearth the meanings, grammar, and ancient gossip inside the holiest prayers of the Jewish year. Created by Maia Brown and Shelby Handler, these audio collages range from meditative to liberatory, grief-stricken to playful, irreverent to awestruck, and from the ancestral to the immediate.

From Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, the Days of Awe, or the Yamim Noraim, are a portal for collective reckoning and return. Each episode of Ways of Awe features a different prayer and could be listened to during the ten days, or in the month of Elul leading up. Whenever and wherever these sounds find you, we hope they deepen your relationship to and reinvention of our annual traditions—in service of diasporic flourishing and decolonial imagining.

@brivelemusic is a Seattle-based duo who braid together Yiddish song, anti-fascist and labor balladry, folk-punk, and contemporary rabble-rousing in stirring vocal harmony. In Yiddish, Brivele (בריוועלע) means “little letter.” Like letters, songs travel — through time and over borders. They pick up dirt, aromas, fingerprints. They are sent to lovers, they foment revolution, they get stolen and censored, burned and salvaged, sewn into our clothes. Brivele is Maia Brown and Stefanie Brendler, who journey into the archives of Yiddish anti-fascist musical tradition, bringing together anti-authoritarian satire, mournful remembrances, and the disguised political commentary in folk ditties and theater classics. These songs are a correspondence: ancestors’ voices speaking clearly and uncompromisingly, sometimes sweetly, to the present moment.

back in December, i asked my friends Stef and Maia of the incredible Seattle-based Yiddish antifascist folk punk duo @brivelemusic if they'd ever be interested in collaborating on a music video.

today, on the 121st anniversary of the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), i'm thrilled to finally share "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night," viewable on Brivele's YouTube channel (link in bio). Stef and Maia's fantastic bilingual rendition of this well-loved folk song (Yiddish translation by Michael Wex) can be found on their 2025 album "Khaveyrim Zayt Greyt," available now from @borschtbeat .

the song memorializes IWW-member and Swedish-American songwriter & labor activist Joe Hill, murdered by the state of Utah in 1915. it's not an elegy, but a call to action, in the spirit of Joe's famous words before his execution, "Don't waste any time mourning — Organize!"

in designing this video, I relied heavily on archival materials, including Joe's own paintings, and authentic documents from his imprisonment and execution at Utah's Sugar House Prison.

this project was unlike anything I have ever done before, and I learned an extraordinary amount. i'm honored by the trust that Stef and Maia showed in allowing me to work with their song, and very grateful for the hard work and encouragement of my collaborators, especially Taylor Claire Kinser, without whom this project would not have been possible.
