Brix HQ last weekend, tucked away into the folds of Bordeaux’s Côte de Bourg. Big bottles for big appetites - ‘building tolerance’ for Saturdays @marathondumedoc . Fabulous hospitality from Kate of @hylstenbakery, feeding hearts as well as stomachs throughout.
A small slice of luxury before the Saturday storm, thanks to all who made it such a blast.

Busy month ahead this April. Straight from @vinitalyofficial in Verona to beautiful Barolo. It’s been too long since our last visit, and there’s plenty of talent to taste.

Here’s an goldie from the 2021 harvest, facing south east on the northern edge of the epic Mosconi cru with @chiaraboschis_pira
Great times. What a vintage.🍇

Producer Spotlight: Cascina Vano 🍇
Barbaresco is one of Italy’s great wines. A landscape of steep, majestic vineyards across Neive, Barbaresco and Treiso, and at this time of year the hills begin to wake up again.
We’ve been working with Cascina Vano for nearly a year now.
A modest family estate in Neive, run by Bruno Rivetti alongside his children Beatrice and Marco, the fourth generation to work these vineyards. Nothing showy, nor overworked - just very fine Nebbiolo from beautiful terroir, something shining clearly in the wines.
The wines are soulful, intensely aromatic and increasingly refined, with the kind of perfume that makes Barbaresco so seductive in the first place: rose petal, maraschino cherry, wild strawberry, eastern spice and fine, persistent tannins.
The range runs from their classic Barbaresco through to Canova, one of Neive’s furthest eastern crus, and a reserve Il Pilone nei Rivetti - from the family’s historic vineyard. Long macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak keep the wines transparent and expressive, while keeping the character of their landscape.
For us, Cascina Vano captures Barbaresco at its prettiest and most pure.

Why we started Brix.
To bring people closer to the producers and wines we love, and to create the right settings for those wines to be shared and enjoyed properly. It’s pretty simple.

As an early harvest gets underway across Italy this year, we’ve been looking back at a memorable one in 2020.
A wild bunch from across Europe, brought together in that brief window of magic between two lockdowns, harvesting with the queen of Barolo - @chiaraboschis_pira .
Hot days, cold nights and the kind of Indian summer conditions Nebbiolo thrives in. Dream harvest weather, although you only really appreciate that after you’ve worked through a few wetter ones..
There’s something about that patch of Mosconi in Monforte. An energy in the vineyard, and in the people it seems to attract, that reminds you how much great wine is ultimately about people, place and passion.
Six years on, there’s something special about tasting 2020 Barolo knowing exactly what the fruit looked, felt and tasted like coming off the vines in such company. That energy is still very much alive in the wines.

Sad not to be there for it this year.
Here’s hoping every grower gets the weather they’re praying for.

Cellar Pull: 1997 Le Tertre Roteboeuf.
One of the most enchanting wines of the Right Bank, made by one of Bordeaux’s great characters. We were lucky enough to visit François Mitjavile a few years ago, who greeted us in his slippers for a 10am cellar appointment.

François is the sort of winemaker who, when he speaks, you listen. Philosophical, passionate and completely individual in his approach. Tertre Roteboeuf comprises just six hectares in Saint-Émilion, producing around 2,000 cases a year, and has long sat intentionally outside the classification system.
Mitjavile has always done things differently - his vines are trained unusually low and he harvests famously late, pushing ripeness further than almost anyone in Saint-Émilion. The wines can be wonderfully voluptuous and exotic, but they rarely sacrifice freshness or personality.
That makes 1997 particularly fascinating. It was a difficult year in St Emilion: a hot, humid summer brought serious disease pressure before heavy rain arrived towards the end of August. The vintage generally produced lighter, earlier-drinking wines and has always lived in the shadow of 1995, 1996 and 1998. This, however, was far more interesting than anything we can remember from the vintage.
Over two hours in the glass it pushed multiple personalities - silky and fragrant, then deeper and more savoury, constantly changing but always unmistakably itself. Less about power or pedigree and more about character, texture and a very real sense of a special vineyard at the source.
Knowing the growing conditions always makes wine tasting more compelling when you get into it. In a difficult vintage, there is nowhere to hide, and wines like this become as much a record of the decisions, instincts and work of the person making them as they are of the vineyard itself. There is something special about drinking a bottle that captures both.

1997 Le Tertre Roteboeuf. A real treasure of the fine wine world, and one we’ll always keep an eye out for.

Two big reds worthy of a mention from the Brix table recently. Different varieties, different regions, but both showing exactly why we have such a soft spot for mature Aussie wine.

2016 @winebyfarr Farrside Pinot Noir - The kind of Pinot that reminds you why By Farr sits among Australia’s elite. A decade has softened the edges without dimming the energy. Wild strawberry, dried cherry, forest floor, sweet spice and that unmistakable savoury, autumnal character that only time can bring. Textured, layered and completely at ease with itself. Love to experience this side of Pinot. Mature examples are scarce, which makes bottles like this all the more rewarding. I wish these were on more London shelves.

2006 @twohandswines Bella’s Garden - Sixteen years on, Bella’s Garden has swapped its youthful intensity for depth and detail. Black cherry, baked plum, liquorice, olive tapenade and smokey bacon unfold with surprising herbaceous freshness still driving the wine. The tannins have melted into the fruit, leaving a broad but silky palate. A reminder that well-built Barossa Shiraz deserves more attention as an age-worthy style than it often receives, and you don’t need to spend hundreds to get something full of personality.

Even when it’s 30°C outside, there’s something iconic about pouring wine like these with a bbq. The moment your nose hovers over the glass, you know exactly what you’re smelling and where it came from. Long live the great Aussie reds.

°Bx Producer Spotlight: San Fereolo
San Fereolo is one of Piedmont’s most enchanting estates.
Founded in the early 90s by Nicoletta Bocca, in the wild, rustic and insanely beautiful hills of Dogliani, this is a name that forces you to rethink what Dolcetto can be. Not simple, but a grape capable of incredible depth, longevity and emotion.
Everything you feel in the wine comes from a decision to let the grape and the land express themselves in their own way. Biodynamic farming from exceptional old vineyards in the southern Langhe, long fermentations, extended ageing, and releases only when the wines have found their own rhythm. Nothing rushed, and nothing made to fit the markets idea of what Dolcetto should be.
The flagship San Fereolo is Dolcetto at its most powerful: dark-fruited, savoury, earthy and incredibly ageworthy, with dried herbs, mineral tension and a deeply Piedmontese character that changes constantly in the glass, forcing you to slow down and follow its evolution. It carries the soul of old Italy - wildly noble, incredibly complex and completely its own thing.
So much Dolcetto is poured as the easy, early bottle while the showpiece wine waits in the decanter. San Fereolo turns that idea on its head. The wines ask for time: in the cellar and the glass, and from those sharing the bottle. This is why we love them.
In a region where Dolcetto is too often underestimated, San Fereolo makes one of the most compelling arguments for its greatness and crafts wines that bring profound conversation to the table.
We’ve been trying to bring Nicoletta’s wines to the UK since the first moment we tasted them, and we’re proud to have made that happen.
To understand more of the history and culture surrounding the magic, listen to leviopenswine I’ll Drink to That episode 359.

Great to catch up with Florian from Untermoserhof last week.
A mega location, sitting above Bolzano on the hillside, with vines looking out across one of Europe’s most distinctive wine landscapes. Southern Tyrol becomes loveable the second you arrive: steep slopes, alpine air, Mediterranean light, and a strong sense of rich German & Italian identity. The hard cheese and smoked meat help too.
Florian works with Lagrein, Schiava and Chardonnay, bottling single vineyards to show the diversity of terroir across his estate. Everything here is intimate and nurtured. The vineyards, the historic cellar, the scale of production. It feels like he each vine personally, and the wines carry that same feeling.
Schiava has long been misunderstood as a serious variety, often produced more for glugging than contemplating. But from prime hillside sites, handled with precision, it becomes something completely different. Red-fruited, floral, spiced and nuanced, with beautiful mouthfeel, softness and real fine wine capability. It’s brilliant to see the attention it is now getting from sommeliers and curious collectors across South Tyrol and beyond.
Lagrein is another beast entirely. A relative of Syrah, it is dark-fruited, peppery, meaty and full-bodied, with a comforting depth that makes perfect sense in the colder months in the Dolomites. Lovers of the Rhône and southern France should have this firmly on their radar.
His Chardonnay is also excellent. Carrying the sun of the Mediterranean and the wind of the Dolomites, it has a freshness and character that only a handful of climates could produce in this way.
We have visited a lot of wineries over the years. Untermoserhof feels special, and like a dream playground for a switched on grower. A magnitude of inclines, aspects, soil types and vine ages, shaped by the pioneering work of the generations before him.
Great terroir, handled without complication, often produces special wine. Anyone looking for a proper taste of this area should go here to experience it.
Thanks for a special visit.
