Recall featured in @_studio.shields The View project shoot for @bellemagazineau in collaboration with @kingliving.

Made for our first release at Design Miami, this small monolith is made of antique walnut timber from dismantled Victorian furniture. A fitting addition to a home made largely of recycled and salvaged materials seamlessly reimagined.

Fitzroy Quarter by Milieu (Coming Soon)

We’re pleased to introduce Fitzroy Quarter, a new neighbourhood in Melbourne’s inner north, where Fitzroy, Collingwood, Clifton Hill and Fitzroy North meet.

Shaped through design at every scale, Fitzroy Quarter brings together architecture, landscape and local life as part of one connected whole. The project has been developed with a collective of local architects, landscape designers and collaborators, each bringing a different perspective to how a neighbourhood might be lived in.

Explore Fitzroy Quarter via the link in bio.

Starting from seed. We reflect on almost one year since floral artist @hattiemolloy began planting her floral installation in preparation for Broached’s VIP Lounge at @melbourneartfair earlier this year. Hattie’s knowledge and passion for this project along with growing support by @jac.semmler @superbloomau, made for a lounge like no other.

Last week Broached creative director, Lou weis, was pleased to have the opportunity to moderate a discussion between two inspiring design leaders Alexandra Donohoe Church of @decus_interiors and Rachael Fry of @cgallerycontemporary and @criteriacollection to moderate what became a lively debate on Collectible Design.

What makes us choose the objects we live with, what do they say about us, and what does increasingly blurred lines on art and design mean for artists, designers, specifiers and collectors alike.

@elliotbastianon’s current show Analogue and Alchemy, made the perfect surround and subject to the conversation.

Gosford Quarries operates one of the most sophisticated stonemasonry facilities in Australia. We worked with their precision wire cutting machines to create these beautiful Max Lamb stone steps. The steps are a combination of an antiquated typology - the horse-mounting step - made to the height of the standard back of a chair.

Broached’s Recall Medium Monolith will be on display in Plant Life: The Nature of Design at @ngvmelbourne Australia, Fed Square, 28 Aug ’26 - 7 Beb ’27.

Acquired by the NGV, our monolith cabinet, in mahogany and coco burl, sits within an exhibition tracing humanity’s relationship with the plant world through design, from ancestral craft knowledge to the regenerative material futures being built today. The monolith’s veneers, drawn from the @eltongroup timber archive, surface a century of global trade in rare wood, a history Plant Life places in dialogue with new commissions and international loans spanning furniture, architecture, craft and film.

Creative Director Lou Weis will be speaking as part of the exhibition’s Opening Talks on Friday 28 August, alongside designers, researchers and material innovators including @damien_wrightstudios, @joostbakker and NGV Senior Curator @ewanmceoin, discussing the hidden histories of global timber extraction through contemporary furniture design.

Featured pieces with this exhibition:

BROACHED COMMISSIONS, Broached Recall medium monolith (mahogany and coco burl), cabinet, 2021

Chris Wolston, Nalgona chair 05, designed 2019

Álvaro Catalán de Ocón (designer), Mary Dhapalany (weaver), PET Lamp Ramingining: Twin piece, 2016

Pictured is the Birdsmouth Table, 2011, by Adam Goodrum for Broached Colonial, featured in Flack Studio’s Domain project.

Broached Colonial researched the early decades of European settlement in Australia, 1788 to 1840. The brief looked at the resourcefulness of that period, a “make do” sensibility born of isolation and limited materials, and asked what that spirit means for Australian design today.

The table takes its name and its structure from the birdsmouth mast, a technique used in shipbuilding from the mid-nineteenth century, where individual timber staves are shaped and glued together to form a hollow mast far stronger than any single solid length of timber could be. Goodrum carried that same logic into the table’s eight legs, a piece of naval engineering turned into decoration, with the same motif carried through to the brass handles on the drawers, lined in kangaroo skin.

The design also looked to Chinese Chippendale, the ornate, lacquered furniture style that reached Britain in the eighteenth century through trade with China and was widely imitated in workshops across Europe. A found sketch of a Chinese Chippendale table with eight legs, the reasons for which remain unknown, became a direct reference point for the Birdsmouth Table’s own.

Pictured is the Tall Boy by Charles Wilson for Broached Colonial, paired with the drawing Untitled 2005 by Philip Juster, as part of The Grey Zone, 2020, an exhibition curated by @trentjansenstudio and @editionoffice.

The Grey Zone coupled applied-arts objects with two-dimensional works from the @artbankau collection, each pairing mounted on a shared armature so object and artwork could be read as equals, forging new dialogues drawn from the historic and cultural significance of each piece, and the experience of the curators themselves.

Presented for Melbourne Design Week 2020, the exhibition pointed to the dynamism and storytelling that occurs when objects and art are viewed in close tandem, and the potent relationship that has always existed between art and design.

Our Recall Small Monolith at home in @kim.kneipp’s “Dawn to Dusk,” a living room reimagined along the banks of Merri Creek.

The Small Monolith takes graphic designer John Warwicker’s pattern language and translates it into three dimensions, striping heritage timber veneer against contemporary dyed veneer, sourced with material partner @eltongroup. The heritage veneers act as a time capsule of 20th-century timber stewardship , with a drawer and hidden storage door operated by a removable magnetic handle that keeps the striped pattern uninterrupted.

Through the Recall collection, Broached continues to explore materials once popular through the 19th and 20th centuries that have since fallen out of favour with the market that drove their over-extraction, using them to comment on how design participates in the gridding of daily life and of the planet’s ecosystems.

Pankalangu Armchair

Designer Trent Jansen first encountered the Pankalangu over conversation with Western Arrernte elder Baden Williams. A creature entirely camouflaged in desert scrub, the Pankalangu can only move with rain, its form revealed only when water running across its scales catches the light, defining its form as a glistening silhouette.

The Pankalangu Armchair (2017) is part of Jansen’s Broached Monsters collection. Before colonisation, Australia existed in the northern hemisphere imagination as a vast, unknown landmass, its interior populated by fabulous creatures of incredible proportions and improbable anatomy. When early British colonists began to learn of the frightful monsters of Aboriginal folklore, that fear that lurked in the unknown bush became a point of cultural confluence for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Tasmanian wallaby pelt, plywood, copper, stainless steel, French leather, polyurethane foam.
