At @helenapadial’s middle school production of “Bye Bye Birdie,” Chita Rivera—yes, that Chita Rivera—came to watch. When she met the musical theater legend backstage, Padial burst into tears of disbelief, and Rivera gave her a hug.Fast-forward to 2026 and Padial, at 21, has been named Broadway’s Next Triple Threat, a new award created by the @chitaawards and @nycda. Since March, the Elon University senior had made it through two video rounds of evaluations by a panel of Broadway icons before an intense training workshop in NYC, ending with the awards gala.Padial took some time to chat with @dancespiritmagazine about the competition, her dreams, and what it means to be a triple threat. One unforgettable moment. ✨As part of Broadway’s Next Triple Threat, our finalists spent the weekend immersed in training, mentorship, and once-in-a-lifetime learning experiences with some of the industry’s leading artists.Just hours before taking the stage at the 2026 Chita Rivera Awards, these extraordinary young performers learned Warren Carlyle’s iconic “Too Darn Hot” from Kiss Me, Kate. They then performed it live for a packed house and earned a standing ovation. 👏This is what the program is all about: connecting the next generation with the artists who inspire them, challenging them to rise to the occasion, and giving them the opportunity to discover what’s possible. BROADWAY’S NEXT TRIPLE THREAT FINALS🌟🇺🇸The only international finalist for the inaugural competition in New York City. This nearly didn’t happen. So many nos, many many tears. Thank you Selina H for your yes🥺. To learn from Broadway’s elite and perform at the Chita Rivera Awards. Leaving inspired by the people I met, and surprisingly being told that those people were inspired by me. To the finalists, sharing the JOY of what we do together. Learning a routine in six hours! Thank you Warren Carlyle for your time and choreography. Thank you @lanterijoe for creating this competition and to the adjudicators for picking me out of hundreds. There will never be enough words to describe how I am feeling right now. Definitely a pinch me moment. This weekend was filled with blood, sweat, tears, and so much joy. I feel more connected to my art and work than ever, and I feel so lucky to have been a part of this beautiful process. Chita Rivera surprised us at our middle school production of Bye Bye Birdie and I just accepted an award in her name, in front of the iconic triple threat, Ann Margret who turned Bye Bye Birdie into a sensation???? UNREAL. There is so much more to say, but for now all I can say is thank you times a million!! And to my fellow finalists: I am so proud of us. We just did a really crazy thing!!!
