At @helenapadial’s middle school production of “Bye Bye Birdie,” Chita Rivera—yes, that Chita Rivera—came to watch. When she met the musical theater legend backstage, Padial burst into tears of disbelief, and Rivera gave her a hug.

Fast-forward to 2026 and Padial, at 21, has been named Broadway’s Next Triple Threat, a new award created by the @chitaawards and @nycda. Since March, the Elon University senior had made it through two video rounds of evaluations by a panel of Broadway icons before an intense training workshop in NYC, ending with the awards gala.

Padial took some time to chat with @dancespiritmagazine about the competition, her dreams, and what it means to be a triple threat. Read the full interview at the link in our bio! ⭐

About last night… we’re still floating a little. What an extraordinary evening celebrating the dancers, artists, storytellers, and community that make Broadway and film move. The joy, support, and love in the room was something you could truly feel. 💙

Robyn Hurder and Charlotte d’Amboise kept us laughing and smiling all night as our gracious and fearless hosts. Robert Silk Mason even led us in a collective community breath, a reminder of what this night is really about: connection.

There were so many unforgettable moments. Watching Broadway’s Next Triple Threat winner Helena Padial receive her award from the incomparable Bebe Neuwirth (few people understand the dedication of a true triple threat quite like she does) was incredibly special.

And seeing the legendary Leslie Uggams present our Lifetime Achievement Award to Ann-Margret was one icon celebrating another in the most beautiful way.

We are so humbled by this community. The Chita Rivera Awards would be nothing without all of you, and we are endlessly grateful to celebrate and honor dance in the name of our angel, Chita Rivera.

RESULTS, PHOTOS, AND SO MUCH MORE COMING SOON ✨

There will never be enough words to describe how I am feeling right now. Definitely a pinch me moment. This weekend was filled with blood, sweat, tears, and so much joy. I feel more connected to my art and work than ever, and I feel so lucky to have been a part of this beautiful process. Chita Rivera surprised us at our middle school production of Bye Bye Birdie and I just accepted an award in her name, in front of the iconic triple threat, Ann Margret who turned Bye Bye Birdie into a sensation???? UNREAL. There is so much more to say, but for now all I can say is thank you times a million!! And to my fellow finalists: I am so proud of us. We just did a really crazy thing!!! I can’t believe we met 3 days ago. I love you all!

See you at Steps!!❤️🥹
