Brock Dent and Ron Lambert: Attention/Awareness

January 30 - March 5, 2025
Opening Reception | January 30, 5:00 pm
York College Galleries (Wolf Hall)

In 1980, Pauline Oliveros released a collection of writings. The cover of the book featured a circle with a dot in the middle. The essay in the book, titled On Sonic Meditation, explains that the circle represents awareness, and the dot represents attention. Oliveros understood that we need a balance between these two things. Too much fixation on attention to the self becomes isolating and too much energy put toward awareness of the world around us causes us to lose a sense of ourselves as an individual. In the exhibition Attention/Awareness, the works of Brock Dent and
Ron Lambert illustrate how they grapple with a balance between the self and stimuli from the world around them in an ever-expanding sphere of global influence.

This exhibition will open with a Gallery Talk featuring both artists and a reception in the Wolf Hall lobby. Capital “P” Paintings in the Capital “A” Apocalypse!!! @rebeccamorgan10 has never looked freer than this, nor more urgent. The meticulous underdrawings are gone in favor of an oscillation between a looser/frantic brush and an obsessively spectrum bound buildup of dried paint chunks and debris. Both approaches read as the manic seances and spells of a witch desperate to curse those responsible for this small “m” man-made apocalypse. I can’t stop thinking about these paintings. “Madame Psychosis” Lumocolor and acrylic on panel I’ve been working on my drawing when this first slide just sort of accidentally happened. It’s a good lesson to work outside of my comfort zone and try something new without worrying about the end product. In high school I was kind of a menace. During a pep rally I was shouting profanities at some of the football players. A teacher quickly shut it down and said if I couldn’t say anything nice, I should sit quietly. So next time they called a players name I waited until everyone was done cheering, when the gymnasium was completely quiet before they called the next name, and I yelled “I love you, man!” I continued that throughout the introductions. It was really dumb, but then I was voted “Most school spirit” by the end of the year. I’m sorry to whomever was robbed of that vote. taken in The Art Grind by @brockdent
