Mi viaje a Guanajuato, México 🇲🇽

Impossible to capture the beauty and uniqueness of this city on camera. From the narrow callejónes you walk through to get from one part of the city to another, to all of hole in the wall shops and restaurants that couldn’t be more randomly placed and easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. Not to mention the vibrant tapestry of brightly painted houses against the steep mountain scenery.

I was welcomed with open arms by everyone here, even with my blue eyes and broken spanish. Guanajuato was amazing to explore this weekend despite the cartel craziness breaking out, which we were largely unaffected by, outside of businesses closing as a precaution. It won’t keep me from coming back. I love experiencing new cities and cultures in other countries. Until next time #vivamexico🇲🇽❤️

This year was weird.

I’m not sure how to put it into words really, as I’ve largely abandoned my writing practice for about 3-4 years outside of a few moments of inspiration.

It’s tough to sit here and try to alchemize my experiences this year into something insightful or impactful, which leaves me wondering why I feel so much pressure to do that in the first place.

I always envisioned more for myself than to build someone else’s dream, but I spent the entirety of my 20s trying to figure out what that might look like and at 32, at times I still feel like I am running in circles doing the exact same contemplation I was years ago.

Stagnation is painful, and while I could make lots of cases for ways I have grown, there is still a part of me that feels stifled.

Untapped.

Unexpressed.

Begging to be acknowledged.

But the longer I observe things that I think I would like to immerse myself in, sometimes I can’t help but ask myself, “Do I really?”

James Clear has this heavy hitting quote that reads –

“It doesn’t make sense to continue wanting something if you’re not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don’t want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process, is to guarantee disappointment.”

We get to choose our pain. The pain of change, or the pain of remaining the same. It’s up to us to decide what hurts worse.

I’ve done the cute trendy thing of choosing a “word for the year” for the past three years now, and this year’s word was discipline.

It worked really well—until it didn’t.

I eventually became enveloped in the collective rupture around the immensely brutal events of this year.

I became glued to my phone, feeding a fear porn algorithm that left me questioning the point of pursuing anything at all.

The discipline I developed crumbled as I felt like the world as we know it was ending.

But I still refuse to get to the end of my life and be met with everything I left on the table due to fear, and how manipulated I was by things I couldn’t control.

You are more powerful and capable than you believe.

To realize that requires getting the fuck out of your head though. by @brockrichard_

Some action shots of me hitting a rock with a stick.

This game is wildly humbling and has taught me so much about myself and has unending parallels to life.

It has provided me with deep meditative states, and also some of the highest levels of frustration — sometimes within moments of each other. I always come back to the gift that is to be able to play and move my body in this way though, because there will come a day when I can’t anymore.

When I injured my back two years ago, I truly thought that I would never make a full swing again. Patience, discipline, and commitment to the recovery process has me feeling the best I have in a long time though.

Anyway, can’t post anything without being poetic, but what’s the point if not to find some sense of meaning in the things we do, even if seemingly insignificant on the surface.

Shout out to @birdbrainmatt for coming out with me on a late afternoon while I hacked it around. His lens is not meant for this at all so even the close up looking ones were at least 30-40 yards away. Please take a look at his page for some of the best bird photos you have ever seen though!

I had some understanding of how fast paced my life and my mind had become, which is one of the reasons I wanted to do this, but it became unshakably apparent that I was immediately in fight or flight the second I opened my eyes, which is a fast track to disease.

It’s worth noting the importance of checking in with yourself before checking in with rest of the world. I know it’s not easy, but if you’re feeling intense sensations of overwhelm, it’s worth carving out at least 5-10 minutes to see the difference it makes.

This is a topic that I’ve spent an immense amount of time researching and playing with, although I don’t speak on it much because it can feel like it falls on deaf ears at times.

In a world that is increasingly demanding of our attention/energy, and is filled with distractions from whatever we’re turning a blind eye to, meditation is an incredibly beneficial tool to self discovery and expansion.

It’s the first step in putting a leash on the subconscious patterns that are running rampant without us even realizing it.

Notable differences —

◻️ Less reactivity to things that would otherwise upset me

Yes I’m still human, and things still trigger me, but having those instances be more short lived and understanding my humanity in these situations makes space for acceptance. It’s making sure to not let things derail your entire day, week, etc.

◻️ Conscious breath + a more regulated nervous system

So many people are walking around in fight or flight and wonder why they get sick all the time and have a perpetual feeling of overwhelm. Our brain is designed to find threats (predict + protect). So it’s not your fault that you project worst case scenarios. Understand that an ideal future is just as real as the one you’re concerned about.

◻️ Disconnecting belief from truth

This one is tricky as we all have beliefs that we have adopted decades ago that are influencing our thoughts, feelings, actions, and consequently our results. Until we can see the container that we’ve been living in, it’s very tough to expand beyond it. It can be quite the messy process, but immeasurably worthwhile ✨ taken in Scottsdale, Arizona by @brockrichard_

Becoming content in solitude is one of the greatest strengths you can develop.

After all, the relationship that you have with yourself is more important than any others.

That’s where everything starts.

If you are constantly judging, shaming and berating yourself for things that have transpired in the past, you will most certainly seek externally for approval, love, and acceptance.

Here’s the spoiler though — we can’t possibly receive any of that if we don’t first give it to ourselves. We will deflect compliments, push people away who show affection, and find any excuse to dismiss any praise we receive from those closest to us. Sound familiar?

Once I became aware of these tendencies, I realized that there was a lot of work to do.

When you have held yourself to such a high standard at any point in the past, it can feel near impossible to give yourself grace when you quite literally don’t have the physical or mental capacity to show up in the way that you are comparing yourself to — at least that was my experience.

Over the last couple of years, I felt like I was constantly drifting away from my values and the person that I knew myself to be at my core. I began to truly feel unrecognizable to myself. This came with brutal moments of self judgment.

I connected with @josephsheehey during one of my lowest points, who reached his hand out and pulled me up onto my feet again. After completing the @wthn.coaching program, getting clear on my values, and connecting with individuals bumping up against similar challenges, I began to feel like I was coming back to myself.

This year will demand a lot of alone time out of me in order to be where I want to be by December — but I feel more at home in my body than I have in a long time.

Reflections from Houston

▫️Time is slipping through our fingers much faster than we realize. Nearing the third decade of my life, I’ve had to sit with a deep knowing that the hours spent in contemplation will never carry the same weight as any action step towards what I want. Even if you end up having to redirect or shift your focus (which I’m certain we all have), it’s immensely important to create momentum. The more you follow through on the promises you make to yourself, the more confidence and trust you build in yourself to figure it out even when shit hits the fan.

▫️ Conversely, the importance of patience is becoming increasingly apparent. This goes without saying for most, but I can look back on many ventures in my life where I wonder — “What could have unfolded if I just gave this more time?” This isn’t a helpful frame of mind to live in though. Many don’t delay gratification long enough to see the fruits of their labor. I’m no exception. It takes a long time to build something meaningful and worthwhile — especially if it’s in alignment with our mission and values.

▫️Presence is an ever-fleeting state of being. My last four days were spent with my parents, who for the first time in my life are more than a twenty minute drive up the road. 1200 miles is a bit different. When I have the opportunity, I try to truly “be here now.” Do you feel like you really connect with those you’re spending time with? It’s hard to put the phone down. I’m as guilty as anyone. But we owe it to ourselves and to those who give their time to us to embody presence the best we can — to disconnect in order to reconnect.

These reflections may carry a somber undertone, but if you really sit with them then they can serve as an invitation to simply go forth with more intention. Every moment counts my friends ✨ taken in William P. Hobby Airport by @brockrichard_

I’ve hesitated to do this for a while but here you go 🤷🏼‍♂️

First ever hole vlog from the 14th hole at Silverado Golf Club ⛳️

I feared posting stuff like this because it’s obviously so easy for someone to stage and just redo shots if they wanted to which a lot of people on here get accused of and hated on for.

This round was a rollercoaster though with everything from an eagle to a triple bogey on the scorecard and then getting chased off the course after this hole by a dust storm 😅

Hopefully someone enjoys this and maybe I’ll post more in the future.
