RIP mX / LONG LIVE mX

For the past few months, I’ve had the dream gig of guest editing two special editions of mX, Melbourne’s beloved commuter paper that @rising.melbourne has resurrected for its 2024 festival.

mX was a fixture of my earliest years in Melbourne (scroll to the end for the 2012 copy I saved lol yikes) and I went into this project wanting to tell stories that connected everyday readers to the shows and ideas in RISING’s program this year. Also: I wanted to get a bit weird with it.

To do that, I commissioned stories from some of my favourite writers – and also worked with some people who’d never written before but whose ideas and work I love.

In this first issue you’ll read Mahmood Fazal on Yasiin Bey’s impact, Gen Fricker on the behaviour of comedy audiences today, Oscar O’Shea from MOM publishing on the image of Melbourne captured in Rennie Ellis’s photos, Sophia Somerville in conversation with Melanie Lane, a story from Frank Sweet on a bonkers brekkie, Anton De Ionno’s contemporary dance primer, an inner-north itinerary from Good Morning, Shaad D’Souza on why Sky Ferreira doesn’t even need to put out that second album, and Shankari Chandran on the perspective on her family’s story she saw reflected back at her from the stage.

I asked 21-year-old pals Tyke + Tove to chat to HTRK about what it’s like to be a band celebrating the same birthday.

I got Liam Runnalls aka LR to create custom festival crosswords, Romy Hoffman to illustrate the artists, Jerico Mandybur to write a lunar forecast for the festival’s first weekend, and Tara Kenny to come out of street style retirement.

This issue also pays tribute to the late, great Shannon Michael Cane, ahead of the festival’s opening night tribute to and celebration of him. Max Olijnyk wrote a great story about an ABF run-in with SMC, and I chatted to Andee Frost about his memories of the Witness Protection Parties. (Thank you to TMJ and Jason Froome for the party photos <3)

To answer the question I’ve got from every person who heard I was doing this: yes, we brought back the text messages too.

It’s actually so iconic to write a September issue cover story on @charli_xcx, innit?

Called Charli a week after the Kamala tweet set off a new subplot in the Brat summer and a day after she and Billie swam through knickers. Thought a lot about girlhood and motherhood and having the moment meet you where you are and how competition and jealousy operate. Talked to @troyesivan and @juliafox and @skyferreira.

Can’t thank @hannahroserose for the perfect assignment and brief, and for tolerating all my updates while she was on holiday.

*Charli XCX voice* How I’m Healing Now

After my first treatment with @laurawrenmelbourne in July we made a plan to get me back in to @wren_melbourne for some (#gifted) IPL to zap at the “reds and browns” aka discolouration and dark spots from sun damage and the sneaky capillaries under my skin that have made me identify as a red-faced person my whole life.

I had to baby my skin for a week after: cleansing and moisturising only, with SPF top-ups throughout the day. The redness and swelling took a couple of days to calm down, and then I was back to my beloved LED mask and, in time, active skincare again.

I became a bit obsessed with documenting the whole process, as my sun spots came to the surface, got super dark then disappeared. Two-weeks post-treatment that glow they tell you about has fully arrived and I’m loving myself sick. by @brodielancaster

Our micro-spotlight has returned: this time with @brodielancaster behind the wheel talking about having an opinion online.

She’s a critic, author, copywriter, Rookie alum, zine founder, pop culture memoirist and professional haver-of-thoughts, and has written about everything from Charli XCX to spending a week without her phone, with bylines in The New York Times, Vogue, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and basically every masthead worth pretending you read in full.

But to us, she’s the Melbourne PTV princess and one of the sharpest, funniest people to ask about the strange little theatre of saying what you mean on the internet. We talked taste, criticism, comments sections, changing your mind in public and why having an opinion is less about being loud, and more about being specific.
