Luggage, 2024, epoxy, paint, electronic components, water

Included in “Half Life” @makcenter with @katrinhornek. On view Saturdays and Sundays until December 8th.

These new works continue my series of birdbaths: found objects re-rendered in sculptural materials, turned into functional birdbaths. The water slowly bubbles and fills the basin, before slowly draining back into the sculpture. A funny offering to the local birds around the open-air gallery.

These works were inspired by my neighborhood after a rare rainy day, but also by Darwin’s theory of the “warm little pond.” Darwin theorized that the origin of life happened somewhere in a landlocked environment where small, warm ponds continually filled with rain water and then evaporated. A churning, primordial soup mixing the complex molecules that were the building blocks of life. taken in Mak Center Mackey House by @brodyalbert

Elysium (Birdfeeder), 2024, epoxy clay, PLA, primer paint with black thistle and sunflower seeds.

The fossil was found in 1931 on Flat Top Hill in Lincoln Heights, when a plumber was digging a trench to plant an orchard in his backyard. It belonged to a small baleen whale from the time that Los Angeles was under an ocean. The species was named “Mixocetus Elysius” after nearby Elysian Park.

The sculpture turns the whale skull into a birdfeeder, offering black thistle and sunflower seeds to the local House finch population.

Part of “Half-Life” with @katrinhornek currently on view @makcenter

The sculpture takes its form from the “Lincoln Heights Whale,” a fossilized whale skull that was found a few blocks from my house. The skull belonged to an extinct species that existed ~11 million years ago, when Los Angeles was under an ocean.

The skull was reconstructed with the assistance of a paleontologist and rendered at 3/4 scale. A recess in the upper jaw was filled with birdseed and positioned next to the open-air balcony of the gallery, turning the skull into a functioning bird feeder.

After a life under the ocean, and 11 million years underground, the skull is put into contact with living birds flitting around Los Angeles’ skies.

Birdbath, 2024
Painted epoxy, electronic components, water

The birdbath sculptures are cast in epoxy and then carefully hand-painted. Each sculpture contains a custom pump that slowly fills and drains the pool of water from the indentation on top of the piece. I like what @soldes.la said: “In Brody’s work discarded objects often take new functionalities. Here the deflated basketballs double as birdbaths. They are a silent invitation to the birds that surround the gallery.”

Huge thank you to @auzal for technical support/assistance/genius 🙏

Koan, 2024
polymer gypsum, wood, epoxy resin, paint, sand

These owl decoys are ubiquitous in my neighborhood. Seems like one on top of every house. It’s a funny kind of object, meant to be seen by animals, not humans. Similar to a scarecrow, or a duck decoy, or even a fishing lure — trompe-l’oeil for critters. This sculpture recasts the decoy so it’s permanently looking at itself. Which for me, creates a kind of philosophical riddle.

I am thrilled to announce my show with @saraellenfowler at @soldes.la opening this Saturday, June 22nd. Reception from 5-8PM.

🌸🌸🌸

Soldes is pleased to present “Shapes from the Extramundane,” a collaborative exhibition between artist Brody Albert and poet Sara Ellen Fowler. Their exhibition features sculpture and site-specific poetry that explore the extramundane, the generative tension between the everyday and the out-of-this-world.

In poetic theory, a “nonce form” is a poetic form invented for a single purpose or occasion. Shapes from the Extramundane proposes an exhibition as a nonce form. The interactions between site, sculpture, and language, here, are as occasional as a summer garden.

Here’s the invitation:

Cast polymer gypsum, steel hardware

“There’s an abandoned building near a busy bus stop in Lincoln Heights. Across the street is an empty lot, sometimes used for pop-up events, craft fairs, haunted houses, and other temporary functions. The lot is littered with palm-sized rocks, perfect for throwing. Over the years, passersby, perhaps in a moment of anger, or rebellion, or boredom, have chucked these perfect rocks at the windows of the building. These breakages, mingled with a patina of disuse, have coalesced into an indexical composition of collective mark-making.” –Hunter Shaw

The exhibition is on view until December 17th.
