His progress is unfolding right before my eyes. We’ve been doing F8Parkour classes for about two months now. Twice a week. This is the first class he was able to keep his body in control during most the warm up time. Usually he’s zooming around all over the place. Wrecklessly, actually. His excitement, the lights, the sounds it’s all very challenging for Brody to actively engage his body. But, we’ve stuck with it. I believe the sensory side of things is starting to become manageable because of our consistency. He’s also in such an inclusive, supportive environment. The coaches, and peers are truly so great. I get this question…. A LOT….theres not perfect science to this. We switch from sticker books, to pixel blocks, to unloading dishwasher, taking walks, taking drives it’s exhausting. But- so worth it. Often families will comment how regulated Brodys body is… most of the time he is. And it’s 100% bc he’s no longer on devices. It used to be constant unruly vocal, running, and jumping stimming while he carried around his iPad next to his face. It’s taken almost a year to get to this point. Removing the iPad came with many attempts and failures… but we never quit trying. Trust me, I know it’s relentless and exhausting. Codependency is a tough one. I asked him why he always needs me to be the one to take him, he spelled “trust”. Which I totally get. But…. I hesitated sharing this for a couple weeks. But, I pride myself on sharing things that are true to our journey. I won’t ever share footage of physical outbursts. But, hiding that it exists doesn’t help other families in our situation. The complexities of profound autism affect the entire family. It affects us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s give us all the opportunity to be better. To be the hands and feet of Jesus to each other daily. I used to try to shield my other children to the best of my ability. But, as Brody has gotten older it’s impossible. Tbh…it’s also not helpful. If you know siblings of profound autism, reach out and encourage them. Hug them a little extra tight.
