Saturday lunch at gluten free heaven, Trastevere. The smile on my face is cos I can feast on the things I can't usually have, deep fried mini pizzas (zeppole) with cheese and tomato, potato croquette filled with spinach and sausage, and ham and cheese arancini. A 2 hour ballet class covers me for the pistachio and chocolate gelato at Giolitti's afterwards 😋

Celebrating the first day of Autumn and the solstice by trying out a new local restaurant, Osteria Carlotta. A modern take on old classics now coming back, like veal in tuna sauce, cured tuna, eggplant balls, skewers of offal, lemon cream sponge..... All dishes I loved 30 years ago when I first arrived and have been off menus for many years now. Feels like a new restaurant is opening every few months in Garbatella making it even harder to leave our wonderful suburb. Cocktails in the local piazza as the sun went down, lovely to be able to walk everywhere. Carlotta is the name of the woman our suburb is named for, kind and beautiful, garbata e bella. Those of you who have toured Garbatella with me might remember the fountain of Carlotta at the bottom of the 'kissing stairs'.

Last of the summer wine. The seasons are about to change. Everyone is back from holidays and the temperature has finally dropped to 30 degrees. Normal life is about to resume but there is still time for cold white local wine and calamari fritte by the beach, evenings out in Piazzas, aperitivo with friends in neighborhood Piazzas, and some more visitors. Our 4th set of second generation visitors this summer (points if you guess whose son this is, he is a lookalike!), and these ones got engaged on a rooftop while in Rome, congratulations!!!!

Meal with a view! Wonderful Sunday lunch with Sally and Guido from @conviviorome, cooking holidays in the Roman countryside, on their beautiful terrace overlooking the Sabina hills. Yes there are 3 types of cheese - sheep's milk ricotta, an aged peccorino from the farm next door and a burrata from Puglia.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going! 😁 Hiking in the freezing waters of the Farfa River carrying only cushions...... In a desperate attempt to combat the still stifling temps of Rome. Immersed in water so cold my hands hurt and loving it. Thank goodness for my fellow aussie ex pat and long time friend Sally @conviviorome who thinks nothing of sitting on a creek bed for the afternoon to cool off in her local neighborhood of the Sabina countryside.

Headed to the hills of Rome where it's cooler for an evening of eating BBQ steak and tiramisu deep in the forest surrounded by wild boar. So nice to be outside. It's around 5 degrees cooler here which is a great relief after months of temperatures in the high 30s, early 40s every day and still no relief in sight.

Buon Ferragosto! A very important holiday in Italy and a key turning point of the year. Traditionally spent having a long and large lunch with family. Seen here with my Giglio family and our pot luck lunch. Alex and I made a baked eggplant and vegetable dish and a lemon and oil cake with a basil and white chocolate ganache.

There is hope for children everywhere..... This one had a device at 2 and couldn't travel, eat or relax without it. Today he casually takes out a book, (Harry Potter no less), and mentions that he left his phone at home....... Hoorah we are related!!!! AND he cooks! Lasagne for dinner. by @brontejacksonwriter

Last views of the island from the ferry as we sail back towards the mainland. View of my favorite spot in the garden that surrounds the tower and cottages. Deep down an internal path is a secluded spot with a lounge bed I am to be found snoring on most afternoons.
