I spent the first ten days of August reading poems in hammocks and holding my baby niece and cooking for twelve on the Oregon Coast. I only opened my computer once to find a coconut cake recipe! I was fully off all social media.

Trying to hold onto this attention even as I return to instagram, course prep, and email (always email).

Thanks to these reading companions and those who brought me to these books!

Each chapter of A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO TEACHING CREATIVE WRITING features interviews with brilliant writers, teachers, and students. Chapter Three: Structured Experiment and Generative Writing includes "Tariq Hussain on generative experiments for lyric songwriting."

Tariq Hussain @tariqmusiq teaches lyric forms at UBC's School of Creative Writing. He is a Juno-nominated songwriter and recording artist known for his solo work and his work with the band Brasstronaut. Tariq is also a broadcaster who has frequently hosted on CBC Music. Tariq’s essays on song craft have been published in The Walrus. by @bronwentate

I had such a good time leading a workshop called “Teaching as Yourself” for the @ubccreativewriting summer residency this week. In true “teaching as myself” form, I 1) couldn’t get the HDMI cable to work and 2) made a little booklet for participants to take notes in.

I also got to join a @sarah_leav workshop where I made a little “foldy comic” about planting zucchini.

Feeling very lucky to work with these colleagues and students. by @bronwentate

Cecily Nicholson is a past recipient of the Governor General’s Literary Award for poetry, the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, and the inaugural Phyllis Webb Memorial Reading award from the poetry in canada society. Her collaborative practice spans museum, artist-run, and community arts organizing and education. She was the 2025 Holloway Lecturer in the Practice of Poetry at UC Berkeley, the 2021 Writer in Residence at the University of Windsor, and the 2017 Ellen and Warren Tallman Writer in Residence at Simon Fraser University. Nicholson teaches in the School of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) people.

A.E. Osworth is a transgender novelist. They are a lecturer at UBC where they teach fiction and new media. Their debut WE ARE WATCHING ELIZA BRIGHT was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. Their novel AWAKENED (2025) is about a coven of trans witches fighting artificial intelligence with magic. by @bronwentate

Claire Donato is Assistant Chairperson at Pratt Institute, where she received the 2020-2021 Distinguished Teacher Award. She is the author of three books, most recently Kind Mirrors, Ugly Ghosts (Archway Editions, 2023). She's also a candidate in psychoanalysis at the Contemporary Freudian Society in NYC. by @bronwentate

On Saturday, Vesper and I met my friend and colleague @Sarah_leav at the @no.ai.vancouver march from the art gallery to city hall. It was really moving to walk with my child and my colleague and chant “environment over profit” together. I think it meant something to Vesper too to make her own sign and walk until she was tired and be around people who care about the world she’ll grow up in. I asked a woman holding up a copy of PARABLE OF THE SOWER if I could take her picture, and she said “Sure, and I took your big poetry class a few years ago.”

And then on Sunday, we went to a potluck strawberry party and swam in the ocean. Because it’s also important to remember what’s beautiful and worth fighting to preserve (strawberries, clean water, human generosity and gathering). by @bronwentate
