Episode 63 is here! @bronwentate writes poems about sex after miscarriage, among other things. She is brilliant, she is my friend. Recorded from my bed in 2022, I don’t entirely remember what we talked about…definitely writing, higher education, friendship, and Barbara Johnson.

Last night’s Whole Cloth reading by Carrie Ayagaduk Ojanen of her book ROUGHLY FOR THE NORTH was superb. Dense with detail and image, stacked with movement, illustrative of the hard truths of colonialism, peppered with humour, and astonishingly coming in just under an hour so Carrie had time to talk with the listeners. The interesting questions and comments prove that a whole cloth reading is unique and needed! There is a special quality of engagement when we experience the poems sequentially in flow. Thank you to all at Green College who help make this series possible. We are grateful to be able to share community copies of the book, a real hallmark of our series! And hats off to my codirector Bronwen who is on top of details and also a practioner of the radical hospitality this series fosters. What a lucky poet I am to be part of this!

Bronwen Tate @bronwentate from HOW TO STAY

Feather-drifting thick flakes of spring snow
catch and melt in Vesper’s curls. I’m an old

half, she says, then, koala crying. My neighbor
lifts and shapes a tall vase, explains craft saturates

into philosophy. I spread my hands

between story and sound, sip wild white sage tea,
brain finger-limned, slipping yarn through parabolas

of decrease. It’s dinner time. Our children wedge
the dough like clay. Later, like language,

they devour it.

Along with readings of four selected poems from the book, Bronwen offers some notes on a kind of writing prompt she gave herself, a process which took on new meanings throughout different seasons of her life. Give it a listen and try out the prompt Amy outlines at the end, and if you feel like sharing, tag #promptcast ✏️

Happy Sealey Challenge Eve! This is my stack of hopefuls for the month. If you are new to #thesealeychallenge the goal is to read a book of poetry each day, or make your own goal. Overall, it’s about implementing poetry into your daily life. I would love to read a book each day, but honestly some days I may just end up reading two, or finishing the one from the day before. I also have a a couple of re-reads in this stack. But my goal is to share a book each day with y’all.
