Somewhere between magic and reality. ✨ by @brookieb_321

“Be weird. Be rude. Stay alive.”
— Crime Junkie’s core life rules.

I say this to my girls all the time.

It started as a funny little true-crime phrase, but somewhere along the way it became something I genuinely want them to carry through life.

I’m raising three girls in a world that will teach them early enough to be agreeable. To smile. Be nice. Don’t make a scene. Don’t hurt anyone’s feelings. Don’t be difficult.

I want them to know there will never be a moment when someone else’s comfort matters more to me than their safety.

Be weird. Trust the feeling you can’t explain.

Be rude. Say no. Walk away. Don’t answer the question. Refuse the hug. Lock the door. Make the scene. Call me at 3 a.m. and tell me you need to come home. I don’t care where you are, what you did, or what kind of trouble you think you’re in.

Just come home.

And lately I’ve been thinking about another part of protecting them.

I’ve shared so much of our lives here over the years because they are such a huge part of mine. But they’re getting older. They’re becoming their own little people, and I’ve realized that their childhood doesn’t automatically belong to the internet just because I’m their mom.

So I deleted the pictures where you could see their faces.

Not because I’m ashamed of anything I’ve shared. Not because I suddenly think everyone online is dangerous. And definitely not because I’m going to stop being ridiculously proud of these three.

I just don’t think strangers need access to their faces anymore.

Someday they can decide how much of themselves they want to give to the internet.

Until then, that decision gets to stay theirs.

My job isn’t to make them visible.

My job is to keep them safe long enough to become exactly who the hell they want to be.

So, my girls:

Be loud. Be difficult. Be strange. Trust yourselves. Take up space. Never apologize for a boundaries
Be weird. Be rude. Stay alive.

And always, always come home to me. 🖤

Side note: no I’m not going to be that mom who continuously posts their kids with their faces covered with emojis (this is a one off)So if you’ve stayed for the real point, thank you. 🖤 by @brookieb_321

Me at 30 ✨🖤 by @brookieb_321

A little witchcraft in the makeup routine ✨🔮 Using the ColourPop Hocus Pocus palette today with Dead Man’s Toes on my eyes 🖤 Because spooky season makeup deserves to be a year-round ritual.

Moody eyes, a little Sanderson Sister energy, and my daily reminder that everything is better with a touch of magic. 🕯️🌙
