Una mirada a la Cumbia Sonidera, una subcultura resonante que se inició en los barrios de la ciudad de Nueva York y diversas regiones de México en la década de 1980. Esta subcultura subraya la importancia de los saludos que trascienden fronteras, la humanidad y el sentido de comunidad fomentado por la voz ronca de un sonidero. Vale la pena señalar que este género tiene sus raíces en comunidades de clase trabajadora en la Ciudad de México y estados como Puebla, Tlaxcala, Guerrero y Oaxaca. En el documentario, me esfuerzo por adentrarme en los aspectos multifacéticos de esta subcultura. Mi objetivo es explorar temas como clase, iconografía, historia a través de archivos, y es esencial señalar los posibles desafíos a medida que esta subcultura se acerca a la comercialización, planteando preguntas sobre cómo se puede preservar su autenticidad y espíritu en un cambiante panorama cultural. Y finalmente, ¿qué condujo a su creación?

🩶 behind the scenes and stills from a fashion film I produced and directed in 2022. I was inspired by what felt magical growing up big gowns, glitter, movement, sonidero, lots of glamour. I wanted to hit that feel of nostalgia I get when watching VHS tapes of my aunts late 90s. I had fun sorting dresses at the thrift and jewelry! Thank you @nataliesrobles for help with styling. 🩶

After graduating, I pushed a lot of projects to the back burner and got stuck waiting for the “right” time. Post grad is difficult when universities just strip you away from all resources but revisitng this reminded me to just start. I learned a lot from this project. Im gathering all my other projects to share! I think its cool and relevant.

I am still beyond grateful to everyone who was part of this.

Continuando my photo series on recreating looks from our padres in the early 2000's in NYC 🗽Had the pleasure and grace to photograph mi buen amiga @freehooliz in her element at Corona, Queens 🇲🇽 Had long conversations on the endurance our parents have gone through in just staying here for as long as they could.

"La foto original fue tomada en zapatería México es una de las tiendas más viejas en NYC que venden botas de vaquero. La foto fue tomada en Halloween 06 ‘ dónde mi mamá se disfrazó de vaquera. Mi mamá nació en Zacatelco , Tlaxcala el estado más pequeño de México. Ella inmigró 17 años a Elmhurst Queens . Me recuerdo cuando era chiquitita mi mamá me llevaba el trabajo .

Everyone I've come across tells me about the stores that are no longer there and what corners on each block use to look like. cool to see how much of our clothing and style comes back full circle.

Working on a photo series about the fashionable style nuestros padres had in the 2000's in New York City and its journey to the present.

Evelyn, born and raised in East Harlem! Her mom is from Tlapa Guerrero and father is from Atlixco Puebla. Both met in New York City.

This picture was taken in 2002.
