I refuse to shy away from my patriotism.
.
I was taught to be grateful this country let us in. Be grateful for its safety from communal violence and Hindu nationalists, for its public schools, electricity infrastructure, health care, clean drinking water, and the many opportunities available to us here regardless of caste, class, color, and religion. I was taught that no matter how bad it gets here, it’ll never be worse than the worst back home. So, put your head down, work hard, keep your mouth shut, and be grateful.
.
I did most of those things, but I never could keep my mouth shut. Over the years, I’ve refined my approach to activism. I’ve grown more empathetic and strategic; I’ve studied more than I’ve spoken, I’ve learned the profound value of allyship (both being and receiving). I’ve deepened my historic understanding of what it means to be “American” — what it means to resist, to refuse, to disrupt, to speak truth to power, to build movements, to learn from elders, to demand better, and to never stop seeking greater consciousness.
.
Even through the darkest of storms, I remain humbled by my privilege to live here and have rooted my American identity in fighting for its betterment. #immigrantsmakeamericagreat by @brownpeoplecamping

In May, just a few days before my 39th birthday, I had the absolute honor of being the commencement speaker at the University of Minesotta’s College of Design. I spoke to an audience of nearly 2,500 people as we all gathered to celebrate the graduating classes of 2022, 2021, and 2019. While there, I met with #BIPOC and queer students and graduates who are, as they described it, #DesignForJustice. From building spaces to products, they are making the world more accessible and relevant for all those who live, work, and play in it. I am so proud of them and for my parodical return to Minneapolis where, thirty years ago, my family and I arrived from India with a few bags in hand and very little in our pockets.
.
I am so grateful for it all. The journey and the opportunity to talk about justice, struggle, privilege, competition, success, and integrity. I hope you enjoy my speech because it really is a reflection of my life’s work, intentionality, and purpose. Link in bio!

#Sponsored: Did I ever tell y'all about the time I fell in love with a Mustang? It was magical. And what better place than my favorite escape, Assateague Island. Whichever vehicle you choose, choose electric. Thank you @insidertravel @ford for giving me the adventure of a lifetime ✨

I STAND WITH TILLAMOOK 🍦DO YOU??

Through a partnership with @TravelOregon, I had the pleasure of touring the @tillamook Creamery in lovely #Tillamook, OR a few years ago, and TBH it was a fantastic experience. I learned so much about the company’s history as a farmer-owned cooperative, its commitment to its local farming families and employees, its environmental stewardship, and so much great work it has done as a Certified B Corp to think beyond simply making and selling THE BEST ICE CREAM and dairy products.
.
Which is why I was so angered to see #MAGA community calling for a Tillamook #boycott bc some of their products are #halal certified.
.
Making products accessible to Muslim consumers takes absolutely nothing away from anyone else. Halal certification simply allows more people to make informed choices about food that meets their dietary and religious needs. Inclusion is not something to be afraid of.
.
As a Muslim—and as someone who has personally seen some of the values behind this company—I’m happy to #standwithTillamook 🧀💚
.
More of this, please: companies recognizing that their customers come from many different communities and making room at the table for all of us. PLEASE SHARE ANF SUPPORT TILLAMOOK! taken in Tillamook Creamery by @brownpeoplecamping

I refuse to shy away from my patriotism.

I was taught to be grateful this country let us in.

Be grateful for a life without communal violence and ethnic nationalism. Grateful for public schools, steady roads, clean water, and chances that weren’t already decided for you because of where you were born or who you are.

I was told no matter how tough things got here, it could never match the hardest days back home. So you keep your head down. Keep your mouth shut. Work hard. Stay grateful. And then get up and do it again.

I did most of that. But I never quite learned how to stay quiet.

Over time, my activism found its rhythm. I learned to listen more than I spoke, to study history beyond the school books, to stand beside others instead of in front of them. I’ve deepened my understanding of what it means to be
“American” - what it means to resist, to refuse, to disrupt, to build movements, to learn from elders, to demand better. And to speak truth to power even when it shakes your voice.

Even through the darkest storms, my gratitude has never required my silence. The greatest privilege of my American life has been the freedom to love this country enough to fight for the version of it we have yet to become.
