We were so thankful that @rizmi_____ could join us and bring sound into an intentional closing of the day as we ate, chatted, processed and parted ways for the time being, helping us transition from the @brumzinefest day and into the many openings through and in us all to come from it.

Rizmi is interested in the mystical dimensions of sound, music and movement, dissolving perceived boundaries between souls and time - into Presence.

The name ‘Rizmi' is sampled from the great polymath, Al-Khwarizmi, who in the early 800s, revolutionised scientific thinking by combining Greek and Hindu Sciences through a framework of Haqq (Truth) — demonstrating the Universality of knowledge beyond cultures, borders and language, through techniques we still use today (the word 'algorithm' is based on the latinisation of his name).

They believe and share with us all that in transitioning beyond economic, colonial, psychological narratives of disunity and hierarchy, music and art can be our greatest portals in affirming ecology, relationship and love as a unifying force.

Thank you so much to @resolvecollective, @amahra_as, @freedom_balance, @anuhenriques, @farzana.k.khan + @nabil.alkinani for being with us yesterday and sharing their presence, reflections and the many wisdoms they channel as part of a nourishing panel conversation to close an energising day together.

Following a day celebrating DIY publishing, organising and countercultural ways of working together, we were deeply grateful to hear stories from these incredible practitioners and peers in our ecosystem about how grassroots, proximate, relational DIY work is situated within broader revolutionary shifts, representative of how critical countercultures are for societal transformation.

All of their work has and continues to teach us so much, and it was a dream come true for them to share their practice in this space with you all as part of @brumzinefest.

Be sure to check out all things @resolvecollective, @maia_group, @freedom_balance, @skindeepmag, @healingjusticeldn and @privatisethemandem, and other opportunities to learn and build together.

We've been so lucky to have @resolvecollective, @skindeepmag and @freedom_balance with us in Brum today, inviting you to contribute to a playful creative enquiry into our dreams, hopes, ideas for infrastructure to make, organise and distribute printed matter in our neighbourhoods.

What do we think is important when we imagine a neighbourhood print studio that is fit for the times we're in? What would happen there? What should it feel like? Contributions have being warmly invited, created, gathered, and displayed throughout the day in a live open studio format, and we can't wait to keep build from this together.

Join Laurie from BAB (@bioartsbrum} Lab to create your own keystone species such as ancient oak trees, beavers, bumblebees and more out of colourful wool fibres by using wet felting techniques.

BAB Lab aims to grow public interest and appreciation for understanding, playing and working with living materials to create more meaningful relationships with nature and explore some of the most pressing issues we currently face.

BADGE MAKING

Join WEIRDO for a badge making workshop where you'll get to design and make your own badge(s) around the theme of identity and community.

WEIRDO is a zine and collective documenting and celebrating the experiences, perspectives and contributions of South Asian people in the alternative scene. WEIRDO uses ‘alternative’ as an umbrella term for subcultures such as punk and goth.

Founded in 2019, the first issue – Identity and Community in British Subculture - was released in March 2020 and was a collection of essays, interviews, artwork and photography from the South Asian diaspora in the UK. The Music Issue is the second issue which was released in November 2021 and highlights the contributions of South Asian people in alternative music in response to the lack of South Asian representation in this scene.

WEIRDO will also be tabling in the @brumzinefest Zine Fair 11am - 5pm, so visit them to buy copies of the zine!

DESIGN A LIBRARY FOR YOUR STREET

Join Peter and Tayyibah from WeCanMake in Bristol to get hands on with their Front Garden Retrofit Kits, a flatpack furniture kit-of-parts co-designed with local people to support the growth of tangible infrastructure to make space for shared community life. The kits (bench, seat, table, planter, hedgehog house and sharing library) are open source and designed to be easily manufactured by anyone with access to a CNC machine. Explore the idea of how furniture like this could support DIY organising, including a zine or other sharing library held in common, on your street!

HOW TO SET UP A ZINE CLUB

Soofiya is a Brighton-based visual artist and design lecturer whose work explores race, gender and bodies. Soofiya's work also utilises bold and confident linework, and often draws upon a deep love of their cat Aloo and the 80s.

Having set up a fortnightly Zine Club (not to mention a Bad Run Club!), Soofiya invites you to imagine both practical and conceptual ideas around setting up your own zine clubs where you are, creating a mini zine to share and feedback ideas with each other, and those who may go on to join your clubs!

RECIPES OF RESISTANCE

Join Shaheen and Sabba for a creative drawing and printing workshop as part of the Recipes of Resistance zine project. They’ll introduce the project and why they are so passionate about our connection to the earth and being a part of nature, as found in many traditions, as well as the steps we can draw upon towards preservation and healing. They'll also explore the importance of documenting and celebrating, inviting you to draw and create your own print to take home.

More About Recipes Of Resistance:

"Many of our elders, who embody the knowledge about healing from nature, and practice using remedies throughout their lives, are now leaving this realm. As we are wrapped up in our lives of trying to make ends meet, surviving capitalism and enjoying convenience, many of these knowledges and epistemologies may soon be lost, or commodified beyond recognition.

In collaboration with @resolvecollective and @peaksofcolour I ran a workshop gathering people's recipes, tracing the intersections of healing and heritage, and documenting and celebrating natural remedies for healing that we have inherited from our elders, families and communities; the warm milk and haldi, the nettle tea, the bone broth, the tastes and sensations we may have taken for granted, but whose value and capacity for physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, we now recognise.

I want to gather these recipes of healing and wisdom from our communities (e.g. one from my own mother would be boiled whole spices to make a strong infusion to battle colds and flu!) and it's open to all - everyone can contribute recipes from their family, as well as the heritage chain of how they learnt that recipe. And recipes don't only have to be food based (think walks in nature, deep breathing, dancing with friends) and not only for physical ailments, but emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing too."
