Different enlargers can affect the look of your final image depending on how the light is treated once it leaves the source.

Condenser enlargers use lenses to make light rays parallel before they reach your negative. This gives sharp edge contrast but can make imperfections stand out. They can also compress shadow contrast for reasons I won’t go into in this video.

Diffusion enlargers diffuse the light before it reaches your negative. This can make your image softer and more pleasing to the eye. Diffusion enlargers faithfully recreate contrast throughout the whole tonal range. For this reason, most darkroom printers choose to work with diffusion sources!

At Brunswick darkroom, we have four LPL 7700VC diffusion enlargers, two LPL 7700 Pro condenser enlargers, and an LPL 7451 diffusion enlarger for large format negatives and 20” x 24” prints. taken in Brunswick Darkroom by @brunswickdarkroom

We’re putting the analogue back in analogue photography.

Don’t shoot film just to get digital prints back. Keep it analogue throughout the whole process by ordering darkroom prints of your favourite frames.

Once you receive your scans back via email, you’ll now have an opportunity to select your favourite frames for darkroom enlargement. We’ll retrieve your negatives and enlarge each frame by hand in Brunswick Darkroom.

No software involved. Just light, chemistry, and your image brought to life on silver gelatin paper.

There’s a door in Brunswick that most people walk past without a second thought. Behind it, the world slows down.

In our latest film, @brunswickdarkroom owner Dylan takes us through the full analog process. Mixing developer, stop and fixer by hand, pulling negatives from the archive, and watching an image rise out of blank paper under the red glow. It’s part chemistry, part patience, part memory.

Because that’s the thing about the darkroom. A photograph on your phone can be swiped past in half a second. Here, every print asks you to stand still for a minute and look. Dylan spent this roll documenting the first week of his newborn’s life, and in the dark, printing them one by one, he gets to sit with those moments in a way no screen allows.

No delete button. No undo. Just one original negative, and the time it takes to do it justice.
