Some scans from a film I developed with coffee, that’s right coffee, thanks to @brunswickdarkroom and @onacoffee for a fabulous workshop. We shot a single roll each then sat down and developed it , I’m very happy with the results

Join us LIVE at 9am Thursday (AEDT)!

This week we are joined by Dillon Jevon!

Dillon is the owner of Brunswick Darkroom, a community-focused analogue photography facility in Brunswick East, Melbourne. Interestingly, he also has a scientific career researching diabetes.

The Brunswick Darkroom is a specialist analogue photography business in Brunswick East, Melbourne. It combines a professional darkroom facility with photography education, film processing, fine-art printing and recurring memberships.

What makes it interesting commercially is that it’s not simply a photographic lab. It’s building an ecosystem around analogue photography, where customers can enter as beginners and develop their skills through workshops, gain access to professional equipment, and become part of a community of like-minded photographers. By combining hands-on experiences, specialist services and ongoing memberships, Brunswick Darkroom is helping preserve traditional photographic techniques while making analogue photography accessible to a new generation of photographers.

SC@M visits Brunswick Darkroom 🎞️ 📷 ❣️

Understanding the materials and techniques behind photographic processes is the first step towards conserving them. In a two-hour workshop at Brunswick Darkroom, participants chose from a library of historical negatives to develop and take home their own silver gelatin prints. It was a great hands-on way to learn about the chemistry and development process that happens in a darkroom!❣️

Many thanks to Dillon and Oliver from Brunswick Darkroom for the wonderful experience. You can learn more about their darkroom at https://brunswickdarkroom.com.au/.

Dared myself to step out of my usual and go fully black and white. Surprisingly, it moved me in ways I didn’t expect.

Without colour, things feel deeper. There’s a silence to it that somehow speaks louder. Leaving space for feelings that words never quite existed for.

Joy, July 2026. Thanks for a fun day @brunswickdarkroom, I’m pretty happy with how she turned out. Shot on a medium format Ricoh Diacord camera and hand printed. #surealphotography #blackandwhitephotography #surrealism #analoguephotography #mediumformatfilm

Contemporary photography is being discussed everywhere right now. But what distinguishes my work is that I do not treat the photograph as a finished object.

I disassemble it. Reconstitute it.

I print almost blind, tear the paper apart, and reconstruct it through a process shaped by chance, instinct and the unknown. That physical reconstitution of the photographic print is still rare within contemporary photographic practice. It is also where the work becomes most alive for me.

Beneath the material process are layers of personal experience. Years spent travelling through the Australian landscape, working with people across the continent, and listening to different understandings of land, identity, belonging and memory.

The landscape holds memory. Culture holds memory. Light determines what is revealed, what remains obscured, and how we position ourselves in relation to both.

Are we listening? Are we speaking? Can we genuinely do both?

That is at the core of this work.

I’ll be discussing these ideas with Michael Cox during my artist talk for The Sun Is My Religion.
