on a sun-soaked day in May, a mysterious man in a hat was spotted on the canal-lined streets of a Provençal town.

His mission?

To make a short film of this lesser-visited French gem, consisting of pensinsulas and islands, sandwiched between the Mediterranean sea and the Étang de Berre lagoon.

This short film is in fact the one you are watching now:
"The Man in Martigues", which opens with the iconic « Miroir aux Oiseaux » with its colourful houses and crystal clear waters, where boats bob gently in the breeze.

La Ville Rose 🩷🧱
Welcome to the capital of Occitanie 🇫🇷 – the final stop on this odyssey...

Situated on the Garonne river, at the foothills of the Pyrenees, Toulouse is famed for its pink-terracotta bricks. This metropolis in southwestern France is also a great springboard for nearby gems such as Albi and Carcassonne 🏰

(Mountain at the start = Pic du Canigou 🏔️)

It was fascinating to return a decade later, after doing a French exchange here back in 2016 🕰️

After this... An overnight train 🚄🌃🛌

Once again heading further west to the end of the Tagus river, we finally reach the Atlantic Ocean at Cascais.
🌴🐟
Once a Portuguese fishing town just 30km from Lisbon, Cascais grew in popularity as a resort for wealthy Lisbonites and royals from the 1870s onwards.

Lots of hidden beaches to explore, as well as castles and palaces – notably the Cidadela de Cascais, Palacete Seixas and Palácio dos Condes de Castro Guimarães 🏰🏯

Moving further west away from Lisbon's city centre, we reach the neighbourhood of Belém – famous for the immense Jerónimos Monastery, the birthplace of the Pastéis de Nata 🥧, as well as the Torre de Belém 🏰 on the banks of the river Tagus (built 1519). Unfortunately both the monastery and tower were covered by scaffolding when I was there but their beauty still shone through in the overcast December light.
