After I got back from South Africa when I was 22 and had just proposed to my girlfriend Kandice—her saying “no”—I was, as you might imagine, more or less defeated. Everyhing felt both heavy and up in the air.

There was a large stack of mail waiting for me, and in the stack was a letter from the Anglican Theological Review.

I’d sent a poem for publication to the editor, David Middleton, months before. When I wrote the poem, it was in part about a scar Kandice had—and still has—down her leg from surgery to remove and replace a series of cancerous bones when she was a early teen. I called the poem “Salvation’s Scar.” Somewhere in the editing process, though, the poem became more explicitly about Christ’s scars as the paradoxical proof of his victory.

Coming back after the epic failure of a proposal, this letter of acceptance became a double truth. My poem was true generally, but it was also true to me personally in an unexpected and beautiful way.

Salvation is bound to a scar.

This was also the first poem I ever had published. I honestly thought someone had paid Middleton off to get the little poem in print. Surely someone had paid someone off.

And, actually, someone did.

Jesus did. I don’t mean he snuck the poem in for me, though maybe. I mean grace is not grace if you’re able to completely explain it.
