The Circle Flute (2016)

A circular flute designed to be played by four musicians for one listener standing in the centre.

The instrument measures 2.5 metres in diameter and consists of 16 interconnected silver-plated parts. It was developed together with Parisian flute maker Jean-Yves Roosen and flutist Michael Schmid, exploring new ways of playing, listening and making music together.

In the summer of 2016, we brought the instrument to Flateyri, a small fishing village in the Westfjords of Iceland, where four flutists and Þráinn Hjálmarsson spent ten days exploring its acoustic possibilities. Þráinn represented the listener standing in the centre, while also documenting the flute’s capabilities and working with the flutists to develop material for improvisation.

The Circle Flute was first presented at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris in October 2016 and has since been performed internationally. From 2019 to 2023, it also became part of Björk’s Cornucopia world tour, where it was played by the flute ensemble Viibra during the song Body Memory.

The project was made possible through the collaboration of many talented people.

„As if just emerged from the river, a hooded figure sits on top of a pole amongst the trees on the river bank, and stares into the sky. At the right time with the right natural sunlight, the sculpture emits a mist, creating a temporary rainbow over the water. The mystical creature, made out of bronze with high tech sensors in its head, creates a surreal image that borders between the natural and technical.“

Haug: A Rainbow Emitting Sculpture`, a permanent public artwork for in Pforzheim, Germany.

SPECTRUM — a library of around 1,000 glass colours, developed since 2019 in collaboration with @cirvamarseille

Building on our earlier experiments with pâte de verre at CIRVA, which began in 2012, the colours were developed specifically for experiments in glass fusing and pâte de verre, exploring how different glass powders can create new colours and effects.

The library forms the foundation of SPECTRUM, an ongoing project exploring the possibilities of creating large, multicoloured glass panels and windows.

At the end of our residency, we donated the colour library to CIRVA, where it is now part of their collection.

The project has been supported by Hönnunarsjóður (Icelandic Design Fund) and Listamannalaun (Icelandic Artist Salary Fund). by @brynjarsigurdarson

Brynjar is an Icelandic designer and artist currently based in Germany, whose work exists on the border of design, storytelling, myth, and reality. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with prestigious institutions, brands, and creatives, including @galeriekreo in Paris, @cirvamarseille, @fromlighting, Björk, @lafayetteanticipations, @ecal_ch in Lausanne, and @koivu.it . His work is also featured in various museums across Europe.
