'Outfall' by Bryony Gillard 💦
On display in Gallery 2 at East Quay until Sunday 3rd January 2027 🗓️

'Outfall' is a new installation by artist Bryony Gillard that explores the politics of wastewater. Through moving image, sound and sculpture, the exhibition confronts the processes engineered to make our waste disappear. It asks: how do we sense what society tries to keep hidden?

As sewage discharges, polluted waterways and the systemic failures of UK water companies face growing public scrutiny, 'Outfall' turns our attention to the infrastructure through which waste is carried, treated, and released.

Wastewater flows beneath our feet, out of sight and often out of mind, yet it carries traces of our bodies, medicines, industrial chemicals, hormones, and everyday habits.

The exhibition invites us to slow down and pay attention to these materials and the relationships they reveal between our bodies, environments and the systems on which we depend.

Finally getting round to post about Outfall - which opened just over a week ago at East Quay. Official documentation will follow very soon!

Making this work has been an intense (often joyful and regularly very weird!) process and I am indebted to my collaborators and all the humans/more than humans that have contributed to the research and development of this film.
I am also so grateful to the East Quay team for commissioning the work and supporting and collaborating with me on the development of the exhibition. It’s very much a team effort and I couldn’t have done it without the incredible technical expertise, the thoughtful and innovative curatorial and exhibition design support and general care and support and good vibes.

East Quay is a really special place - and it’s special because of the amazing humans that put their hearts and souls into running it, caring for it, programming it, imagining/willing it into being.
Visit if you can, not just for my show, or the fantastic open call exhibition or the artist studios - but for the vibes!

If you can’t make it, and want to see the film, drop me a message and I’ll send u a screener link x.
@eastquaywatchet .
Full access info for the venue is available on EQ’s website. The film is subtitled and there is audio description on headphones in the gallery (written by professional AD Charlotte Whitten). There is also an audio description of the installation and exhib info on a QR code in the gallery. Both of these are also on the website. The seats in the gallery have padding and backs, the building is wheelchair accessible & there is disabled parking outside. X

More bottle faffing in a different outfit. We have filled them with sand and stuck them all down with museum putty because they are just too tempting to squeeze and pick up. On that note - an edition of them is available to buy! Post on this soon!

🔊 NOW OPEN in Gallery 2! 🔊
‘Outfall’ by Bryony Gillard
19.09.2026 - 03.01.2027

East Quay is delighted to present a major new solo exhibition by artist and researcher Bryony Gillard, which invites audiences to reconsider the unseen water infrastructure that shapes everyday life and the environmental consequences flowing beneath the surface.

‘Outfall’ brings together moving-image, sound, and sculpture that explores the hidden politics of wastewater, drawing attention to the sensorial and often invisible materials carried through our pipes, sewers, bodies, and waterways.

The exhibition arrives at a critical moment in the debate and public conversation around water infrastructure in the UK. Through a series of layered narratives, ‘Outfall’ investigates these systems, from leak-detection dogs trained to locate failures in water infrastructure to plumbers navigating the physical labour of maintaining water systems.

Bryony’s work reveals wastewater as more than a by-product of modern life. Instead, it emerges as an archive containing traces of illness, pharmaceuticals, hormones, industrial residues, and everyday human activity.

Congratulations, Bryony! 👏

Outfall, Bryony Gillard, 2026
East Quay, 19 Sept - 3 Jan

It’s almost here! This Saturday 19th Sept my new moving image work will premiere in a bespoke sculptural installation at East Quay (Watchet, UK).

This has been in the works for a while and I am so excited to share it with the world. The project would not have been possible without an amazing group of collaborators & contributors including Oliver Sutherland, Mary Woodvine, Lewin Greaves, Tina Hitchens, Sarahsson, Jo Kelly, Maria Christoforidou, Cape SPC, Nikki Glover, Bluey, Bandit and Davey the detection dogs, Billy and Shirley the Bass, as well as all the friends and peers in the UK and USA who have provided feedback and advice along the way.
I am so proud of this work and can’t wait for it to meet the world.

A huge thanks to the East Quay / Contains Art for their sterling work installing this week. Come through for the party this Saturday! by @bryonygillard

About the Water Element Social Practice Lab X KUBU Monthly Hybrid Conversations

The Social Practice Lab at Winchester School of Art, in partnership with KUBU, artist-run culture house in Finland, invites you to tune into our Elemental Threads Hybrid Conversation series.
https://kubu.fi/hybrid-conversations/

Our monthly sessions kicked off in March 2026 with a focus on the element of water, with each conversation bring us into deeper concord with this vital force, often described as the “matrix of life.” Drawing on a wide range of perspectives, the series spans ocean justice and governance, hydropolitics, the fluid mechanics of computer circuits, to the weaponisation of water and the breath-holding experiences of a free-diver.

Conversations with guests are moderated by Prof Teresa Dillon, convenor of the Social Practice Lab, at Winchester School of Art and curator of the Elemental Threads programme. taken in Kulturhus Björkboda by @bryonygillard

Maine photo dump:
Mainly of Steuben at Sue and Will’s magical cabin ‘Hummingbird’ - built by Will (a carpenter) who has owned the land since the 80s and built his family’s house and the cabin there slowly over the decades. It’s in a pretty remote place, but easy to find because of their flag!
We saw Monarch butterflies, made cyanotypes, watched the most beautiful sunsets, swam at high tide and did some canoeing in Will’s canoe (can someone give me lessons as I my dyspraxia means I find paddling a bit confusing!)
Also featured - Jersey the lab/staffie cross (a misunderstood sweetheart) and an angel Golden Retriever we met at Lincolnville motel.
We hiked around Black Moutain/ Caribou Mountain - the closest we came to Acadia after Trump’s new $100 fee per non US resident.
Oh and some chainsaw sculptures we are still regretting not having cash with us to buy. by @bryonygillard

Still digesting an inspiring week with a group of beautiful people at Colby Summer Institute in Environmental Humanities at Colby College (Waterville, Maine, USA).

It was such a privilege to spend a week thinking/talking with, and listening (in awe) to an incredibly special group of academics from a diverse range of fields. Coming from an arts background into this context was intimidating, but the atmosphere was super welcoming & I learnt so much!

A huge thank you to Macarena Gómez-Barris @macagomezbarris29 for carefully guiding our workshop group through a wild ride of works in progress. & to our 3 other professors, Mishuana Goeman, Nicole Seymour and Nicole Starosielski for fascinating & engaging seminars & keynotes and interesting chats along the way.
We were also very lucky to be joined on an excursion to Allen Island (now owned by Colby) by Nolan Altvater, Amber Hickey, Mali Obomsawin, Ann Pollard-Ranco, Darren Ranco & Lokotah Sanborn, who generously opened up the decolonial histories, presents and futures of the island.

A massive congrats and thanks to the organising committee and coordinators, especially Portia, Dean and Chris for taking such good care of us and for the jello shots! @danielbritain @caw2105

A special mention to my fellow *Bad Girls Swimming Club* members, @mitchel.jurasek and Brennan, it was such a pleasure to spend time in the water with you, you gorgeous creatures. 🩵💙🩵.

Last week I had the privilege of contributing to @openschooleast public programme, invited and facilitated by dear @ffionobrien & hosted at @turnercontemporary
I gave a talk about my current research on the politics and aesthetics of wastewater. It was really fun and I was asked insightful and challenging questions by the audience. The OSE crew are an absolute delight and it’s a really special programme. I am sad I won’t get to see their final show!
And a big thank you to @lets_go_outside_today_ for being a fabulous host after the event.

Thank you to everyone who came to my talk and to all the folks I chatted to and met with during my trip. Margate - you made me feel really welcome!

It was an absolute delight to reconnect with Ffion, who I was lucky to teach at UWE a few years ago. I vividly remember her brilliant work and the fascinating conversations we had. Sculpture is drag! 💥💥💥💥Ffion showed me what she’s been working on at OSE and it’s stunning, vulnerable and funny (stupidly didn’t take a pic but follow her on here for amazing images of her work). I’m so excited to continue to witness her practice grow and evolve. Working with artists is a real blessing.

Also a special mention to beautiful @emiialrai - with whom I always seem to cross paths with at the right time. It was so lovely to reconnect and hear about your current research! And thank you for the copy of Moby Dick! Books are my love language 💙🐋.

Upcoming public event – After the flush: Exploring the aesthetics and politics of waste/water through creative practice – Artist talk with Bryony Gillard

🗓️ Wednesday 27 May, 6:00-7:30pm
📍Turner Contemporary
🎟️ FREE, booking required - link in bio

In this artist talk and workshop we will embark on reading, watching, writing, listening and creative exercises that expand on the murky topic of wastewater. Wastewater, its management, what it contains, where it goes and who gets access to sanitation, is a pressing contemporary issue. It is a visceral, personal, intimate and often hidden material, yet it is much more than a physical consequence of urban metabolism. In a context where wastewater spills regularly affect beaches across Thanet and recent power outages at water treatment sites affecting local drinking water supplies, this workshop is a space to explore our individual and civic relationships to wastewater through discussion and creative practice.

Bryony Gillard is an artist and PhD Candidate at University of Plymouth. Situated between writing, workshops, performance, moving image and exhibition making, her practice reflects on events, states of being, materials and organisms that refuse or resist normative capitalist structures and temporalities. This might include thinking about grief, sickness or erotic autonomy, engaging with materials such as sewage, seaweed or auto-fiction and working with genealogies of feminist labour that are elusive, messy and entangled in contemporary concerns.

🧩

This event is organised by OSE Associate Ffion Colquhoun-O’Brien, and is part of Towards the Edges, Open School East's Public Programme 2026 - find more events: openschooleast.org/public-programme-2026 taken in Turner Contemporary by @bryonygillard
