Congratulations to Ball State English Creative Writing Faculty on the release of his new book of poetry, Li Po, Li Hua, and the Sophist from Fernwood Press.

We look forward to celebrating Professor Bethanis at his reading, January 26!

"Li Po, Li Hua, and the Sophist explores themes of spirituality, war, love, and art through three characters. The characters face challenges and hardships on their respective journeys through different cultural landscapes. The book blends the different points of view into a single collection of poems that creates connections over time and place to show the ambiguity, pain, and beauty of the human spirit." by @bsuenglish

Do you enjoy the magic battles of high fantasy, the lightning-fast combat of kungfu, or the deep lore of anime? In summer 2027, immerse yourself in Chinese Fantasy and Martial Arts. Two uniquely Chinese genres (Wuxia = martial hero; Xianxia = immortal hero) have their foundations in ancient Chinese literature and history.

In this study abroad, we will experience in person the heritage, heroes, and horizons that have been inspiring Chinese storytellers—poets, novelists, game designers, filmmakers—for centuries. You can find out more at bit.ly/chinesefantasy.

Or learn more at this month’s screening on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in NQ 144 at 3:30 p.m. We will enjoy Asian snacks and watch several animated Chinese short films. by @bsuenglish

We’ve got a special guest coming to campus! ✨

Meet our 2026 Writer-in-Residence, Varian Johnson, who will be at Ball State October 19–21!

We’ve planned three events while he’s here: a Writing for Young People Lecture, a Reading & Conversation featuring BSU alumna Ashley C. Ford, and a pizza party. 🍕

Johnson is the award-winning author of “The Parker Inheritance,” “The Great Greene Heist,” “Twins,” and “Playing the Cards You’re Dealt.”

Come hear him talk about writing, bring your questions, meet fellow readers and writers, and spend a little time celebrating books with us! A red promotional graphic for a Pizza Party. The top features white text that reads, “Pizza Party with Varian Johnson,” alongside a white cartoon illustration of a smiling pizza slice in sunglasses. In the center, a photo shows young children eating pizza together at a table. White text below reads, “Wednesday • October 21 • 5:30 p.m. Ross Community Center 1110 West 10th Street, Muncie, IN” A vertical black-and-white checkered pattern runs along the right border. by @bsuenglish
