I don’t know how y’all live your lives and keep up with Instagram at the same time, but I can tell you that this past week in Muncie, celebrating the 2026 Ball State Writer-in-Residence with @mrvarianjohnson and @smashfizzle, talking books and writing with young readers was. . . incredible. Thank you to these amazing, generous writers and the village that helped make this week happen. My heart is full.

Not all writers enjoy the process, but for Indiana author and Ball State professor Jill Christman, it’s the way she makes sense of the world.

How do you feel about the craft? Do you enjoy writing or having written?

Scenes from last week’s joyous and soul-nourishing trip to @ballstateuniversity, where I had the honor of being a visiting writer at the annual In Print Festival of First Books.

So many highlights! But I especially loved getting to know the wonderful students in Jill Christman’s graduate @riverteeth_ class; listening to readings by fellow visiting writers Yalie Saweda and Geoff Peck, and spending time with the magical members of the BSU English Department, including @kedidden, @silas_hansen, @jillchristmanwriter, @markneelywriter, and @daycathy.

The best surprise bonus was wandering into the @domaatbsu museum in my down time and stumbling upon an incredible exhibit of original drawings by the illustrator Nora Krug, whose graphic memoir BELONGING is now next on my to-read list.

Ball State @bsuenglish friends, thank you for having me!

When we chatted with Ball State professors and Hoosier authors Jennifer Blackmer and Jill Christman about Women’s History Month, they reminded us of two important writers and shared their words of wisdom.

What writers come to mind when you reflect on women’s history?

Have you seen “Borrowed Babies” at the Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis yet?

The play by Jennifer Blackmer is based on a book by her fellow Ball State professor Jill Christman. It takes a look at the forgotten history of practice babies, in which university home economics programs would partner with orphanages to “borrow” babies for students to practice taking care of. It grapples with questions like what it means to be a mother and “have it all.”

We had a chance to chat with the two Hoosier writers after a performance this week about what it was like to adapt the story and work together.

You have until Sunday to catch the play!
