I used to think diving was about going deeper.

Now I think it is about COMING BACK.

Back to the breath.
Back to the body.
Back to the present.
And sometimes, back to a part of ourselves that became quiet a long time ago.

In Transactional Analysis, we call it the Free Child, the spontaneous, curious, playful part of us that experiences life directly.

As we grow, that Child can become restricted.

We learn to perform.
To achieve.
To control.
To become who we think we need to be.

The Child doesn’t disappear.
It simply becomes less accessible.

And this is what fascinates me about diving.

Underwater, many of the identities we carry on land lose their importance.

Nobody underwater cares about your title.
The fish don’t know your salary.
Your inbox cannot follow you down.

There is very little to prove.

Only:

Breathe. Notice. Adjust. Be here.

Diving requires awareness, boundaries, and respect. And within those boundaries, something becomes possible:

Adult provides the awareness.
Free Child provides the aliveness.

That combination matters.

Because freedom isn’t the absence of boundaries. Sometimes, good boundaries are exactly what allow us to feel free.

And maybe that’s the blind spot about diving:

We call it an escape, when perhaps it is the opposite.

Underwater, your breath keeps calling you back to now.

Maybe inner peace isn’t something we find 40 meters below the surface.

Maybe the water simply becomes quiet enough for us to hear what was already there.

Eventually, the diver returns to the surface.

The deeper question is: who comes back?
