Miranda Wynne Freedman has spent her entire collegiate career in a fighting stance — not against opponents, but against every system that told athletes they had to leave part of themselves at the door to compete.

Tonight, she puts the guard down.

A medically retired Division I fencer, Team Captain, founder of EmpowHER, President of @buckeyespectrum, Athlete Ally 2025 Chapter of the Year recipient, Big Ten LGBTQ+ Equality Symposium presenter, U.S. Surgeon General mental health meeting participant, incoming Clinical Psychology doctoral student, and one of the most quietly powerful advocates in collegiate athletics today — Miranda joins us at Play for Joy to speak to what it means to be both things at once. This June, Pride Month and Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month intersect in meaningful ways. For Queer men, particularly in sport, navigating expectations of masculinity, identity, and belonging can create unique challenges that impact mental health and well-being.

Living authentically is more than self-expression—it is an act of resilience, community care, and, at times, suicide prevention. Prioritizing self-reflection, emotional wellness, and radical self-love strengthens our ability to show up fully for ourselves and for the student-athletes, coaches, and colleagues we support.

These are not symbolic acts; they are tangible practices that help us become better humans and more effective practitioners.

The Pursuit [Good] Intentions program provided custom gala outfits for the team and we sat down with Co-President @jvcobharmon to hear about how he’s leveraged his career in gymnastics to find his people and help other student athletes find inclusion. #GoBucks taken in Pursuit by @buckeyespectrum
