• E L • G O R D O • I don’t tie much for Pike or Musky, but have always been drawn to the flies for them.. the size, the flash, the crazy colourways, the huge profiles.. my good friend @tj_jukic recently asked for an addition to his GT Flies order, something big and broad to throw when he’s back home after chasing GT’s for the huge pike of his home waters.. and this is what’s heading his way. This Fleye tapes out at 14 inches long, and has a 6 inch width profile with a broad bulkhead upfront - a true El Gordo.. Tied on an @ahrexhooks SA 292 Bob Popovics Beast hook in 8/0, and finished off with a set of @rupertharveyflies new Immortal Eyes - Bucktail, Ostrich and a little @sybai_flytying Saltwater Angel hair … Hoping to see this hanging out the gob of a BIG Pike in Tomi’s hands soon. #bucktailfleyes #beastfleye #bigfliesbigfish #flyfishing #flytying by @bucktailflies

• U N I C O R N S • There is no denying the effectiveness of large BEASTFleye and Large extended Hollows (Stanty Specials) in Black, and variances of black based colourways.. Blurple, Black and Red, Black and Olive, plain black.. especially for GT’s, they just flat out work. Despite their obvious effectiveness, I’ve never particularly enjoyed tying them.. they’ve always just been harder to make “pretty” to me.. and on top of that the single biggest issue for me has been finding high quality black Bucktail… a lot of folks will agree, it’s like unicorn shit.. black is tough to dye, and maintain the softness of a quality tail, and still get a proper deeeep black.. I’ve been dying my own for a while now, and got it down to where I’m happy and confident I’ll get what I’m after… and not damage any primo AAA tails.. but the nerves still run high when you chuck a REALLY good tail into the dye mix and hope like hell… Scroll to the last slide to see just such a unicorn… fly shown tied with said tail, and some in house dyed red, and chucked in a little purple too… having a supreme tail like this in black made tying this thing a ton of fun again.. @ahrexhooks SA 270 6/0 @rupertharveyflies Invisible Tabs Slide 5 showing that despite this being a huge fly with immense profile, she’s still sparse and flowy and with a little keel weighting should cast like a dream. #bucktailflies #bigfliesbigfish #flytying #beastfleye #flyfishing by @bucktailflies

Olive over white.. this BeastFleye pair with a few subtle additions of pale yellow into pale orange on the belly and chin, and one with a bit of electric blue fleck added into the olive dorsal. On @ahrexhooks SA 270 6/0’s with @rupertharveyflies exceptional Invisible Eye Tabs to finish. Around 12 inches in length. #bucktailflies #beastfleye #flytying #bigfliesbigfish #popfleyes by @bucktailflies

• 35 x 13 • No other platform in my experience gives you the ability to create such large wide body profiles as Bob Popovics BEASTFleye.. Enjoyed pushing the limits a bit with this one, in terms of length and width, but still maintaining an easily castable and fishable fly. Just over 35cm long and just over 13cm wide on an @ahrexhooks SA 270 8/0 hook. #bucktailflies #bigfliesbigfish #popfleyesforever #beastfleye #flytying by @bucktailflies

• K W A G G A • Was recently very chuffed to be asked to tie up a fly as part of a gift to none other than absolute Springbok Rugby legend @kwaggasmith by his good friend. The brief was just “something big and bad ass”.. So tied up a BIG BeastFleye in Springbok colours for the big man. @ahrexhooks SA 270 8/0 for the steel. Hope to see this hanging out of a suitably big fishes mouth soon! Happy birthday @kwaggasmith and thank you for being an inspiration on and off the field to all us South Africans! @bokrugby #bucktailflies #kwaggasmith #springboks #bigfliesbigfish #beastfleye by @bucktailflies

B U C K N U T S 170 Rand. About ten bucks. Less than a pint or three in most of the places you’re reading this from. That’s what it costs to spend one and a half hours with Andre “Dre” van Wyk (@nepptuna of @bucktailflies) — one of the most knowledgeable bucktail tyers on the planet — learning how to tie BEAST-level flies from scratch. Ever found yourself targeting large predatory fish with a fly box that doesn’t quite cut it? BUCKNUTS is the fix. This Sunday 14 June at 7pm SA time (10am PT / 1pm EST / 2.30pm ACST), Dre is going to lift the skirt on working with bucktail at the highest level — from origins and sourcing, to fibre selection, thread control, proportions, tying in stages, troubleshooting and a live Q&A. Whether you’ve never touched bucktail or just can’t get your proportions right, Dre meets you where you are. 🎥 Can’t make it live? A full replay is available. 🎟️ Sign up at the link in bio. See you on Sunday! by @bucktailflies

• P O P • F L E Y E S • Pinks, purples and yellows go together so well, and together give an amazing pop of colour.. seemed fitting to chuck them together into this Bob Popovics BeastFleye. 4 purples, 2 pinks, 2 yellows and white blended and faded. @ahrexhooks SA 270 6/0 #bucktailflies #bigfliesbigfish #popfleyesforever #flytying #flyfishing by @bucktailflies
