After what felt like a very long period of tying fly packs for tarpon in Gabon and Costa Rica, I was excited to tie some pelagic bait colorways and dived into this pack headed to @loslocosfishing with @carmecic. Its amazing how quickly you get rusty when you havent tied a pattern for a bit and it took me a few gos to get comfortable with the mono extension hollow style tying again. This pack is made up of two point mono extension hollows "Stantys", full 5 point mono extension "beast" hollows and two point mono extension versions of my andinos. As always, my hollow fly tying is largely based off what ive learned from @bucktailflies and Dre's amazing willingness to share his passion for and knowledge of bucktail and tying techniques.

If your in the market for some flies for any form of predatory species that likes to eat other fish, drop me a DM and we can chat.

In the last few weeks, I have worked on this pattern with bucktail. I went with the idea of tying the mono extension on the stinger hook.

Actually, the main idea was to find something other than big curly tails. I wanted to incorporate the tail more into the general look of the fly. The whole fly is tied with two colors of bucktail: white and an awesome mixed white and pink.

I know that it's quite big fly, over 25cm, but I have heard that pike like big flies, right?

Watched youtube videoes from @bucktailflies in the proces to learn some great techniques 👍

Feel free to leave a comment if you have questions about tying a fly like this!

The Nemo Beast- ➡️ Swim Video Swipe ➡️

After so many attempts and failures it finally came through. There are some flaws to this but I’ll figure it out next time. This fly is heading to Cabo for roosterfish and snappers. @cook_and_the_fly

170 Rand. About ten bucks. Less than a pint or three in most of the places you’re reading this from.

That’s what it costs to spend one and a half hours with Andre “Dre” van Wyk (@nepptuna of @bucktailflies) — one of the most knowledgeable bucktail tyers on the planet — learning how to tie BEAST-level flies from scratch.

Ever found yourself targeting large predatory fish with a fly box that doesn’t quite cut it? BUCKNUTS is the fix. This Sunday 14 June at 7pm SA time (10am PT / 1pm EST / 2.30pm ACST), Dre is going to lift the skirt on working with bucktail at the highest level — from origins and sourcing, to fibre selection, thread control, proportions, tying in stages, troubleshooting and a live Q&A.

Whether you’ve never touched bucktail or just can’t get your proportions right, Dre meets you where you are.

🎥 Can’t make it live? A full replay is available.
