**Novotel, Paris Centre Tour Eiffel | Paris, France** This week I spent one and a half days in Paris, luckily and despite the very short free time I had, I managed to meet with @brutavia who showed me some stunning buildings in the XVth district. Built in 1976 as the Hôtel Nikko, this 31-storey tower was commissioned by Japan Airlines and designed by architects Jean-Claude Le Bail and Julien Penven. Located in the 15th arrondissement, it forms part of the modernist Front de Seine development. In 2002–2003, following its acquisition by Accor, the hotel underwent a major renovation before reopening under the Novotel brand in 2003. Today, it has 764 rooms and remains a distinctive example of 1970s modernist architecture in Paris. #parisarchitecture #socmod #utilitarianarchitecture #retrohotel #modernistarchitecture 📷 @brutavia **Novotel, Paris Centre Tour Eiffel | Paris, France** This week I spent one and a half days in Paris, luckily and despite the very short free time I had, I managed to meet with @brutavia who showed me some stunning buildings in the XVth district. Summer is over and on top of my usual deep resentment towards the time change and the coming of winter I feel a deep unease with everything that happened during the last few months. Record breaking temperatures, alarming lack of rain and water in general. More and more tensions and open conflicts all around, with all its horrendous consequences. The worst in all this is that I don't see many reason to hope. Still there are a few places I can still go and feel alive, I realize that I really don't need much or to go far, a nice encounter with a shepherd and his dogs, sitting in the grass and drinking coffee, going down the Danube with my kayak, watching birds, going around the country in search of old playgrounds, spotting a nice building, meeting like minded people. So I will try to continue doing it, finding peace in those little acts and trying to keep my sanity, connecting with people along the way, archiving with my photo projects all the elements that catch my eyes. #hungary #videk #photography by @budapeszczt
Last weekend I visited the former psychiatric hospital of Budapest (OPNI). The place was and is still to this day shrouded in myths and stories, with a veil of mystery that makes it hard to tell what is true and what is false. Its closing in 2007 remains one of the biggest medical scandals of Hungarian modern history. I was expecting to visit a lugubrious place, heavy with distress signs and filled with sadness and despair, but I was surprised to find a very decrepit series of buildings that in their days were thought to appease the residents, same with the garden and forest surrounding the complex. To be honest there were so few details left to be seen that it was hard to try to imagine how it was like. Only the upside-down playground house strikes like a reminder that mental distress and pathology can affect everyone at any age. The former OPNI Psychiatric Hospital in Lipótmező, Budapest, opened in 1868 as the Royal Hungarian National Asylum. It became one of Hungary’s largest psychiatric institutions, with a chapel, theatre, swimming pool and extensive park. Renamed OPNI in 1992, the institution closed in 2007 and has remained largely unused ever since. #utilitarianarchitexture #socmod #hospital #budapest by @budapeszczt
The Játszótér series is back! After a long period without being able to visit any new sites I finally was able to go check this one! Absolutely beautiful, still used and well taken care of 👌 Unfortunately no exotic mászóka in sight but it is still very cool to find such sites in the center of Budapest after many years of looking for them. I still have many sites to visit outside the city and something is telling me that I will be going around this winter! #retroplayground #játszótér #playground #socmod by @budapeszczt
One more building exploration. All similar and yet different, No frills, straight to the point—corridors devoid of detail, but with lovely efforts by the residents to brighten things up. Fortunately, a few plants adorn the stairwells. It’s certainly a missed opportunity with the roof, which could offer a lovely common space that the residents could reclaim for themselves. And then there's the need to take photos of the renovations, which are well underway—these people will surely have a more pleasant winter, with lower heating costs, as well as a more modern and cleaner looking building, but the building's original appearance has disappeared in just one week, for the best and the worst. #panelhouse #panelház #prefab #socialhousing #socmod by @budapeszczt
Last August, I met up with @fabienguyon , and we picked up where we left off in March—this time visiting two kocsmas on the Pest side. Between coffee, beer, and conversation, I took a few photos to document our tour, ending with a stop along the Danube to enjoy some delicious fried hekk with kovászos uborka. #socmod #kocsma #thirdplace by @budapeszczt
Inota power plant - After many years passing in front of it and seeing people posting about it or worse, visiting it or even partying in it my time has finally come. Big thank you to the @inotafestival team for inviting me to check the exhibition!! - I honestly was blown away by the scale of the structures, their look and how rich in details and art works the buildings were. To me it is so cool to see such buildings having a second life and those art works still being intact and mixed with contemporary installations. - The Inota Power Plant was built in the 1950s and became at the time one of Hungary’s major industrial sites. Its complex includes a large turbine hall and three 60-metre high cooling towers. - It also included a community centre designed by architect István Szabó which features artworks by Hungarian artists including Gyula Hincz, Géza Fónyi, Endre Rozsda, Aurél Bernáth and Margit Kovács. - Since 2023, the former power plant has been home to INOTA Festival, bringing the decommissioned site back to life with electronic music, light installations and contemporary art. - #inota #inotafestival #utilitarianarchitecture #modernism #urbex by @budapeszczt
Earlier this spring, somewhere south of Lake Balaton, I came across one of Hungary’s last Bzmot trains. Small, noisy, a little rough around the edges — and somehow perfectly suited to the countryside it has been crossing for decades. The first Bzmot entered service in Hungary in 1978. Since then, these little diesel railcars have become a familiar sight on regional lines, connecting villages and smaller towns across the country. But their time is slowly coming to an end. Newer trains are gradually replacing them, and the Bzmot is becoming another small piece of everyday Hungary that we may soon only remember from photographs. I am often experiencing the here and now feeling traveling in these trains, not only because of the particular atmosphere but also the area I am in and the reason I went there. While many people dislike them they really are a good travel companion for me. #bzmot #trains #vonat #socmod #trainspotting by @budapeszczt
A few weeks ago, I met Béla while he was moving his flock across the Hungarian countryside. After taking a few portraits, he asked if I could print them so he could take them home to his family in Romania. He insisted to have them printed in color 😇 A few weeks later, I came back with the photographs. Portrait photography of people in the countryside and especially shepherds is something that resonates strongly in me and having someone asking me for prints was such a good feeling, although a bit pressuring because I wanted the pictures to be really nice. Yes this post isn't about building, or design but It encompasses a bit of all that matters for me and my photography projects: a culture that is fading away, people who are disappearing and, in many ways, living in a parallel world. There are also aesthetic elements quite unique to Hungary, which I’ll discuss in more detail in another post. It also touches on the country’s history, with its past, its wounds and its borders. Hope you enjoy it, for me this is what makes me go out. #ethnophotography #sheperd #hungary #countryside by @budapeszczt
Klastrom Kocsma - I’m happy to see that this place still seems to be doing well. I’ve mentioned the importance and role of “kocsmas” in villages and within local communities. The Klastrom Kocsma is a good example: not only does it function as a traditional village bar, but it’s also attached to a small grocery store. It also prepares and distributes meals to the village’s elderly residents. What’s more, it seems to me that children from the nearby school come there to eat 🤔 It doesn’t just serve as a place to drink but fulfills a social function, offering a mix of catering services and a diverse group of people who benefit from them. - Are there people here that will go to this year's Művészetek völgye fesztivál? There are chances you will find me sipping coffee on that terrasse 😇 - #kocsma #socmod #socialmodernism by @budapeszczt
Details of Bükkszentkereszt Last weekend I spent a few days in the Bükk Mountains. My main goal was to explore the area and do some wildlife photography. Between walks in the forest and waiting for the temperatures to drop in the morning and evening, I also had time to stroll around the village of Bükkszentkereszt and capture a few details. I had already spent a few days in the region last year, and I’m planning to try to go back this fall. #bükk #socmod #detailsmatter #retrohungary Disclaimer: Used a bit of collage in this series 😇 by @budapeszczt
Váci út 60-62, 1970, LAKÓTERV - Last week as I was running errands in the area I walked in front of that grey giant that I had seen so many times already, I was lucky to have the perfect opportunity to visit this building that day. Two thoughts: let's go 🤩 / I don't have my camera 💀 - After years of only checking the buildings from outside I have now so much fun going around the corridors and stairs. - The building is massive, it hosts 131 apartments, each of 44sqm. 7 floors, shops on the ground floor, probably a crazy roof top on the top floor (couldn't access it) - After exploring a few floors it strikes me, despite its massive size and unique look among the Budapest tower blocks scene, there are only a few interesting details inside, it's simple, very simple, too simple? - Luckily at the end I found the level's secret room, with a bit more elements 😇 - One more successful exploration! - #ernogoldfinger #socmod #towerblock #panelhouse by @budapeszczt
