This past year has been the most fun year of our lives!

It all started with meeting Greg Reid and the crazy group of Secret Knock people, but it grew to epic proportions when we went all in on saying YES and having fun on purpose.

Is it scary sometimes? Yes.
Have we made mistakes? Yes.
Has it been the most rewarding year of our lives? Absolutely!

Some of the things we’ve done have been WAY outside of our comfort zone, but that’s what living is. We’ve packed up our kids and spent three months traveling through Central America, something I never thought I would do. We’ve been to movie premiers and concerts, flown in a private jet, sponsored MMA Fights, played high-stakes Blackjack (and won!), and even raced a McLaren down the beach highway doing 120mph. Crazy right!?!

Last weekend we drove up to Beverly Hills and spent several days shooting a Hollywood Short Movie with famous actors and producers...I mean, what the heck?!? (I can’t give too many details yet, but we will have a grand viewing party when it’s released)

I am so thankful for everyone who has made all of this possible, and I look forward to even more of it in the coming months! I’m grateful that we have been able to build enough Financial Freedom to participate in these awesome adventures. We need more friends to come join us!

This episode of Heart of the Matter is about what happens when you refuse to let where you started determine where you finish.

Buddy Rushing @buddyrushing grew up poor, on welfare and food stamps, but somehow beat the odds to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, become a Marine officer and serve multiple deployments overseas.

But this story is just as much about Kimberly @realworldrushings .

They talk about their first real estate investment, Buddy deploying while Kimberly learned the business as she went, and the decision to eventually leave the military and bet on themselves.

That bet became White Feather Investments and a mission much bigger than building wealth for their own family. Today, they help veterans, first responders and others learn how to create financial freedom, while continuing to evolve as entrepreneurs and now teaching people how to practically use AI in business and everyday life.

This isn’t just a story about money. It’s about marriage, sacrifice, resilience, taking risks and changing the trajectory of your life.

18 years… 🥹💕🥂
Our marriage is officially an adult!

So what better place to celebrate than where our love story became a movie... literally 🫠🎬

....

I met Buddy at 17.... he was about to graduate and immediately deploy, I was working overtime to put myself through college. 2 crazy kids on 2 totally different paths. Both dating other people but genuine friends.

Then he left for war.

And for years, I wondered what happened to him. If he made it home. If he was okay. If that ridiculous sense of humor survived everything he must have seen over there.

Enter MySpace, naturally. Because nothing says great love story like emotional reconnection through early 2000s social media. 😂

A few messages turned into a whole lot more, and eventually I did the totally normal, very calm, not-at-all-insane thing of selling everything I owned and driving across the country to California, a state I had never even been to, for a guy I really hoped was worth it.

Spoiler: he was. 🥰

And somewhere along the way, I fell in love with California just about as hard as I fell in love with him.

All thanks to Hollywood - "the city of dreams" - where, like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, I was a girl with nothing who fell for the guy with everything (Ok, so I definitely wasn't a stripper and Buddy wasn't rich, but the analogy works)... 😂

Since then, we’ve built businesses together, had some wins, some very humbling losses, multiple deployments, even more moves, took trips upon trips followed by heartaches and hardships, lost my mom then immediately became parents to our 2 little miracles.... so many highs and lows, of which I would do again and again.

Now, here we are.

18 years later. Still best friends. Still laughing at things we probably shouldn’t. Still making questionable but memorable decisions together. And still just as much in love. 🥹💕

The slower side of Jamaica 😎🌴🇯🇲

Less crowds. More coastline.

Port Antonio is definitely not the place you go if you want everything fast, easy, and perfectly planned. Uber is nonexistent, taxis are 3x the price or require negotiation skills I definitely have not yet aquired, and everything (and I mean eveeeerything) moves on island time.

But honestly? That was kind of the gift of it.

We got ocean views, quiet mornings, work time during summer school time, a hotel-room haircut for Buddy and a very brief must-have-dreadlocks dream that I most definitely lost.

A few little fun facts that made this area stand out...

🏖 Frenchman’s Cove is famous for that dreamy river-meets-ocean setup, featured in several Tom Cruise movies we obviously had to watch while we were here

💿 Geejam Studios has hosted some seriously big-name artists (like Dua Lipa, Rhianna, Alicia Keys, and Katy Perry) and shockingly was located directly above our resort's room... who knew!?

🌿 Portland Parish (one of Jamaica's 14 parishes.. aka states) is known as one of the lushest, greenest parts of Jamaica, which explains the total laid back vibes

It was calm, beautiful, a little inconvenient, but completely worth it.

Would I go back? Probably.

Would I plan transportation better (maybe learn to drive on the wrong side of the ride and just rent a car... 🤔🫣) and still vote yes on Buddy with dreadlocks?

Absolutely. 😂🇯🇲

Well Orlando, we did NOT get off to a great start 🙅🏼‍♀️🛳🫠⛈️👎, but wow did we have a fun finish! 🎢🎡🎠🍦🌞

After missing our cruise and being stuck in a town we've never been to in 95° and max humidity, it wasn't looking good.

But could we have been stuck in a more fun city??

I mean, water parks at every hotel, Disney World, Universal Studies, Epic Adventure, Volcano Bay, Islands of Adventure... to name a few. Soooo many crazy cool amusement parks just minutes away.

So, we regrouped. Spent every night floating in the lazy river, toured a few local attractions (Epic Adventure by far our favorite!!) and spent every moment in gratitude that we somehow salvaged a would-have-been heart wrenching week. 🙏💕

The lesson we learned?
We can overcome anything together.

Our kids had a front row seat to how we handle absolute crushing disappointment. The not-so-great moments included (mostly on my part) 😬🫣

But they also got to see us quickly regroup, make the best of it, and still find joy 🌟
And honestly? That might be one of the most important memories we make all summer.

As for Orlando, for anyone thinking of going, do it!!! But maybe not in the middle of summer 🥵🥵 If you do, though, bring a neck fan. And frozen water bottles. Maybe a mister. And a parasol.

Can you tell we're from San Diego?? 😅🥴

Also, always allllways get cruise insurance.

Took our cuties to their very 1st White Feather event!! 🥹🙏🌟

Not only did Alana get to go up on stage with the biggest sh*t eating grin you've ever seen 🤣 but the kids sat quietly for hoooours reading their books and working on their tablets. I mean, why in the WORLD have we been getting babysitters every time if they're this awesome at a conference!?

Alana even helped me run the mic for Q&A and took her job so seriously she promptly dismissed me when she realized she could easily just do it herself and get all the attention 😅🤷🏼‍♀️

Love these kids so much! And what I love even more? Them getting to see their Daddy on stage doing what he does best - impacting a room full of people on how their lives can be forever changed. In real estate AND in AI. You can already see their little wheels turning to how AI is shaping their own future ✨️

We made it down the mountain just in time for this, followed immediately by our friends' masquerade dragon party (which was quite the topic of discussion as we raced off the stage early to make it in time) 😅😝 photos of that for sure to follow... 🐉🎭

What a crazy start to our summer already, but crazy days like this are exactly what we do it all for 💕 Now we get to chill in Irvine for a few days before we officially fly out. Any fun kid/family ideas around here?? I'm hearing this place is awesome 🙌

Every single one of these trips happened because we made a decision to build a life that did not require permission.

We have been so grateful for every adventure this family has taken together. Every beach, every sunset, every moment we looked at each other and thought how did we get here.

Last week we left again — 9 weeks this time. Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, a cruise, and a stop in Ontario for the Tsunami Summit along the way !!

This is not luck. This is what years of building the right systems, the right investments, and the right community looks like in real life.

We officially made it!!
First stop on our summer adventure.
We couldn't be more excited.. yet simultaneously sad.

It's our official go-to happy spot... but our first time ever without Charlie 😔💔🐕🐾

This was his most favorite place. Where he came alive. Where he would race up and down the docks, charge down the trail, run laps around us.. even at 16 years old. He truly lived his life to the absolute fullest. And we felt it. Even still as we ran down these trails in his honor 🥹

We miss you, CharChar. 💕

I've already cried more times than I can count. But I feel closest to you when I'm here. We love you, sweet boy. I hope you're running circles up there 🌈
