STORIES BEHIND THE GEAR: @buffalosystems

A stag’s demeanour could never be described as ‘quizzical’ or, indeed, ‘curious’. It just kind of stares laconically with a hint of ‘I’m higher up the food chain than you’. It’s not, of course, but you’d still want to avoid any close contact with those magnificent antlers. We hadn’t expected to see a stag on our climb to Lochnagar. In fact, we hadn’t really expected to see anything when we set off in the dark. It was raining, again, and the sky felt heavy. This would be a claggy walk. There was a little questioning (rather than outright dissent) as we woke after a fitful night in the bothy, but we felt like sturdy types in sturdy clothing, and trod on regardless.

On the King’s Balmoral estate, an early summit bid led to a very royal surprise.

Two images, two adventures, two @buffalosystems jackets!

Taken six years apart in mountains of Kyrgyzstan the Skulls are from an Ibex and are the target of the illusive Snow Leopard which, we were laying camera traps to try to photograph.

I was super fortunate to have the support of @buffalosystems on my most recent trip to Kyrgyzstan however on adventures all over the world, I have always worn their kit. This is not a paid endorsement, but I have nothing else to say other than I’m a kit nerd that loves what they do. Made in Sheffield, tested in the field, I can’t imagine reaching for a different jacket when packing for an adventure!

Thank you @buffalosystems! taken in Kyrgyzstan by @buffalosystems

We have just returned from high in the Kyrgyz mountains, working towards a project that aims to come to a population estimate for Snow Leopards in the region.

It is truly a land of mystery, where you cannot be sure what you will find with every step of your horse. The scenery, smells and sounds of this trip will stay with me.

My role was to capture elements of the start of the project, which will run for the next ten years with over 100 camera traps placed in secret locations within the mountain range. We have been using 4x4s and horse back to access areas where the 4x4’s couldn’t get to.

We have been incredibly remote. Often a two or three hour ride from base camp, which is a 6 hour 4x4 to the nearest road and many more hours to the next town let alone a hospital.

Working closely with the rangers from the national park has been key to both the success of the project, but also our safety in the mountains. They’re the most incredible people, living for months at a time high in the mountains, conserving the natural world. For me, spending time with the rangers, while in the yurt or on horse back has been the best part of this trip. Learning about their incredible culture, love for music, horses and history. Their connection to nomadic life, and their semi-wild horses is infectious. Maybe in another life I could be a Kyrgyz mountain ranger?

The project is in conjunction with St Andrews University and The Snow Leopard trust, but fully facilitated by @wildexpeditions.info. My good friends @becca_jevons & @christopher_beard_ started Wild Expeditions over six years ago, taking people on wild adventures all over the planet. Their trips are always linked with a local research organisation and have conservation at their heart.

I couldn’t be more proud of these two! What they have achieved in building this incredible and unique business from the ground up is actually staggering.

Im sad that the trip has come to an end, this has been a true adventure with people that warm the soul. Even if there have been some feral beasts.

Thanks to @buffalosystems for providing some incredible kit for the expedition, none of us took it off!

@sam__sheriff spent twenty-two years as a Royal Marines Commando, serving in every Commando Unit going. Arctic, jungle, desert, all of it. He also became the first serving Marine to earn a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, growing BJJ from nothing into the most popular sport in the Corps.

After leaving the Royal Marines, Sam founded @reorgcharity, using jiu-jitsu to help military, emergency services and veterans through recovery and transition. What started as one man’s idea is now a community reaching right across the UK, awarded an MBE for the work along the way.

Sam first wore Buffalo in 1999, on Commando Training. In the military, it’s known as “warmers kit,” or the “Kabul pashmina.”

The second interview in our Steel & Grit series is with Sam. His time in the Marines, the work REORG does now, and the moment a dry Buffalo shirt made a very wet patrol bearable.

Your dog has been side-eyeing your kit for years. Fair enough.

Say hello to the Buffalo Systems Dog Jacket.

Same Double P System we’ve used since 1979, just reworked for four legs instead of two.

Every one of these is cut and sewn by hand at The Old Dairy in Sheffield, by a team many of whom are dog owners themselves. We’ve had it out in the field on dogs of all shapes and sizes in a variety of terrains.

It comes in two warmth weights to suit your dog’s idea of a good day out: traditional AquaTherm pile from our Mountain Shirt, or lighter micro-pile as used in our O3.

Five sizes are available, in four colourways, Millstone, Black, Olive and Purple. Two pockets for the essentials, and reflective stripes so they’re not just a shadow in the dark, plus hook and loop fastening.

250 will be made in this first batch. Available on pre-order only. Delivery between w/c 28th September and mid October, depending on when your order is placed.

Pre-order now, so your dog has some proper kit too.

Do you have an item of clothing you’re still wearing after 35 years? I bought this @buffalosystems mountain shirt in 1991 before going to Alaska with Op. Raleigh, now @raleighintl and it’s still going strong (more surprisingly - it fits!!). This summer we both returned to Alaska - as stunning a place as I remember. It’s brilliant to see this Sheffield based, British company still doing great kit.

It started as an attempt to find an exit point for the highest BASE jump ever. The expedition was filled with setbacks, difficult decisions, oxygen problems, and, eventually, after reaching the summit and then finding an exit point with good weather conditions , there was then a logistical issue with some of the equipment. Meaning the jump couldn’t happen within the weather window.

But whatever the outcome of the jump, standing on the summit of Everest is something very few people will ever achieve.

For now, this shows josh reflecting at the memorial site below Mount Everest, supported by the one and only @buffalosystems.

The expedition didn’t go exactly to plan, but still achieved something extraordinary. taken in Everest Base Camp - Nepal by @buffalosystems

We’ve been digging through the archive again.

Old product catalogues. Iconic colourways. One off pieces. Prototypes that never made it further than a sample rail. 47 years of stuff sitting in boxes and old files, some of it barely seen since it was made.

We’re planning the next chapter of the Heritage line. No trend chasing. We want to celebrate the iconic pieces that were built to outlast whatever was thrown at them.

This one’s a Buffalo Windshirt, snapped for Mountain Style, the book documenting British outdoor clothing from 1953 to 2000. That blue and yellow was never subtle, and it wasn’t meant to be. Colours you could spot on a hillside from half a mile off. The original Buffalo label on the chest, and stitching that’s still holding, decades after it was sewn.

So tell us. Better still, show us. Dig out your favourite Buffalo piece, snap it, and tag us in it. The jacket you’ve had for 20 years and won’t retire. Something from an old catalogue you always wanted. A colourway that never should have been discontinued.

Drop the photo and the story in the comments, or tag us in your own post. We’re building the next release around what the community actually brings out of the cupboard. taken in Buffalo Systems by @buffalosystems

Due to popular demand, a second small batch of the anthracite Mountain Shirt and Belay Jacket with arm patch is now available.

Same build as always, in a colour that means business, with a hook and loop compatible sleeve patch so you can personalise your kit or change its identity whenever the job requires.

Both products are part of the Buffalo Professional Series, purpose-built colours and kit inspired by the demands of military, mountain rescue and expedition leaders. But they’re also just as at home on a hill walk, a climb, or a day on the bike.

A compatible anthracite hood is available too, if you want to complete the system.

Shop the second drop now at buffalosystems.co.uk, or pop into the factory shop at The Old Dairy, Sheffield, and see Tom or Edward. by @buffalosystems
